Photo uploading - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

There are anumber of message boards, including this one, that allow direct uploading of images to the board. There are also other board that require the user to link to image hosting sites such as Imageshack and Photobucket.

1)How do I do this?
2)Why don't they just allow direct upload??

1)Upload to ImageShack or whatever source you want and paste the image url between IMG tags.
2)Sometimes they can't afford to have too much bandwidth used up by uploading.
