I'd say that Alex and Elaine were probably each other's best friends...and for the first three seasons, Tony and Bobby had each other. Latka...I'm not sure he had a particular best friend, he was the cute, loveable one that everyone was fond of.
As for Louie...I think sometimes, if not exactly liking him, the cabbies did care about him to some extent...although Jim was probably the only one that actually really liked him, as he considered Louie to be his best friend. But Louie certainly didn't consider Jim to be his best friend. So...did Jim have a particular person in the garage you'd say he was closest to? I'd probably say Alex, from what I've seen, but even so, it seems to me that Jim doesn't have a particular best pal...everyone's fond of him, of course, but he just doesn't seem to have a particular best friend. |

Jim really didn't have any best friends. He was more like a close aquaintance. If anybody was closest to him, it was Louie.

I'd say you're right about Alex & Elaine and Tony & Bobby, but Latka's best friend was his crescent wrench, and Jim's best friend was the coffee machine.

Why would you say he's closest to Louie, Brian? I'm just asking because, although I know that Jim always thought Louie was his best friend, from what I've seen, Louie was generally treated Jim the same way he treated the other cabbies, and thought of him as just a flake, who he could occasionally take advantage of. I'd say the cabbie that Louie sometimes treats a little better than the others is Alex (mainly in episodes when he wants some help) and he can be quite nice to Latka too. |

Hmmm, I think Louie liked Jim. I really do. Maybe not as a best friend, but as a good friend. |

Maybe their relationship is explored more in the later seasons, which I haven't seen. I do know that in the episode Cooking for Two, Louie allowed Jim to stay with him, so I guess that means he must have some liking for him. Maybe Louie recognised that Jim was the only person at the garage who actually did really like him a lot, and considered him a friend in return. |

Alex. He was a true friend to Jim and always helped him out, like the time he went with Jim to visit Jim's father.

In the episode where Jim learns that his father has passed away, wasn't it Louie who wanted to break the news to him and Alex agreed by saying something along the lines that Jim does consider Louie to be his best/closest friend?

I don't think Louie always acted like Jim's best friend, though, even though I agree with Brian Damage that Louie probably liked Jim, because he was always consistently nice to Louie. |

I'll have to say that Alex was probably Jim's closest friend from the Sunshine Cab Co.
