Default Is there anything wrong with what I said to my cousin?

I won't try and make this a debate but I informed my cousin I will be laid off on 6/30/06/ It's not a definite thing yet but it looks like it so yesterday she emailed and says-"HOW IS THE JOB SEARCH GOING?

Now let me just say I received this news on my birthday(june22nd) and it' only been 3 days so why would she email me and ask how the job search is going? How many of you would want to hear that question if you were unemployed? I see i'm going to have to tell my family DON"T ASK ME HOW THE JOB SEARCH IS GOING. It makes sense for me to let the family know if I found another job instead of being ASKED if I found one. My cousin seemed like she didn't take my comment too well after I expressed how I felt.

i didn't bother reading your post because more than likely you said something rude and there is no convincing you that you may be wrong or are indeed wrong.

It depends on the email and what you said and how you said it. If you said "Don't ask me how my job search is going" then yeah I would take it the wrong way.

The simplest solution would be to say "nothing yet, but I'll let you know when I land one. You answered the question but in a friendly way said "no need to ask again as I'll let you know" Oherwise you can come across confrontational. She didn't mean any harm so need need to put up a bridge.

I knew when I read the title, that this cousin would be female.

Solomon, don't talk to women, ever again!

No, I wouldn't want to hear that question, but I'd just do what lilhave said and just say I'll let you know. Some people are real gung ho about getting those resumes out right away, some people aren't. Maybe she thought you were the former.

So Solomon, how is the job hunting going?

Seriously, it would bother the heck out of me too.

No the email was very pleasant and I even say please please and added a lol at the end. I just wanted her to understand that asking someone that question who is unemployed can become iritating. Plus it was too early for the question since the layoff period starts in July

Do you even know if you are being laid off for sure?

True Harvey but the thing is I had not started really looking yet because I was on vacation so I felt it was too early to ask me that question. I mean how well can it be going if I just got the news last thursday?-lol

I always hated being asked that. I just answer politely with "Nothing Yet" or something to that effect and change the subject or i'll just smile and make up some excuse to walk away if i'm asked that at a family function.

Then say "I haven't looked yet as it came as a big shock but I do intend to get my resume out as soon as I can" Again you answered the question ,didn't have to say it's to early, and what your plans are. Your cousin didn't mean harm as it's a logical question. Most people saying when they hear of job loss, "what are you going to do next". You follow sports, "No harm, no foul". Ride with it because others will ask the same question as it goes with the territory.
