Talking The Beatles overrated?

I've been looking through many of the entries on this board, and I've noticed a few of you feel that The Beatles where overrated. Let me assure you they weren't, they have gotten all the attention they have deserved throughout the years. They are, in fact, the greatest and most influential band in the history of rock music. Without the Beatles rock wouldn't have progressed the way it did. The Beatles where the spark that created a rock revolution, and there is no denying that!

That sounds like a matter of opinion to me, just as it is a matter of my opinion that they are overrated.

There is no merit in saying that rock wouldn't have progressed without the Beatles, because there is no way you could possibly predict what would have happened in their absence. It is entirely possible that there would have been a band with just as much if not more influence.

Let's just see if anyone else could top them! They were so diverse. I admire them in that they didn't get stuck in just one style like so many other Musicians of the time did! At least they were always trying something different and fresh! Not many have achieved this! They are the best!

Not having experiencedd Beatlemania first hand, it's hard for me to judge if they were overrated or not. Their legacy is quite enduring, and I do enjoy much of their music. I do not deny that they were innovators and are quite influencial. I just have a hard time imagining why people were so hysterical over them.

Then again, people were hysterical over NKOTB and N'Sync. Having experienced both of those movements, I really cannot understand it in the least. Popularity is an odd thing.

That being said, I love the Beatles. I enjoy their music. If by some miracle, John Lennon was raised from the dead and the Fab 4 was doing one show, and it cost $1000 a head to get in, I'd pay it.

Just because I find them extremely overrated does not mean that I can't acknowledge that they were innovative and influential.

However, about the popularity thing, people may get excited over NKOTB and N'Sync, but nowhere near the level of hysteria people had over the Beatles.

The comment of "let's just see who can top them" is also simply a matter of opinion. Many bands top the Beatles in my book, though they obviously do not in yours.

And there is no way in H-E-double-hockey-sticks that I would ever pay four figures to see anyone in concert, unless I was unfathomably rich.

I GUESS WHAT I MEANT ABOUT TOPPING THEM IS HOW MUCH THEY HAD ACCOMPLISHED MUSICALLY IN A FEW SHORT YEARS. NO OTHER MUSICIAN HAS DONE THAT SINCE THAT I KNOW OF!I AM NOT TOTALLY A BEATLES FANATIC I LIKE THE DOORS, CCR, THE EAGLES, THE DOOBIES, AND A LOT OF OTHER BANDS JUST AS MUCH! BUT I HAVE TO GIVE THE BEATLES THEIR DUE! BY THE WAY, I CAN'T AFFORD IT EITHER!

When you consider how many bands name The Beatles as one of their influences, it's hard to doubt their impact. Precious few bands can say that their music has spanned over two generations. Hell, most bands can't even make it in their own generation. The Beatles have been broken up for 30 years or so, and yet they remain one the most popular bands in the world. The fact that the compliation CD "1" was recently a best seller proves that they are far from being over-rated. They deserve the credit they have gotten. I can respect the "The Beatles are over-rated" opinion, but mine would have to be this: Even if you dislike The Beatles, saying that they are over-rated is almost laughable.

Hmmm... There is absolutely no doubt that The Beatles have had the most profound affect out of anyone in the history of popular music.
Yet in the end, we will never know if rock would of progressed the way it did woth or without The Beatles. I mean, there were other similiar bands making the same kind of music at the same time.
If it wasn't The Beatles, then it would of been the Stones, or even The Kinks for that matter.
Anyway, I agree with coily, that I can't really understand what made them something to be hysteric about. Yeah, they made good music, and yes, they were good looking ( before Sgt.Pepper's...), but why be manical over them?
We'll never know... but then again, when will we EVER understand why millions of girls my age swoon over N*SYNC? One of the mysteries of the earth, I guess...

I agree that there is no way of knowing who would've started the rock revolution, but in the end, the fact remains that it WAS The Beatles. This is why a stronger arguement is made in favor of The Fab Four. Now, we should start a topic called "If The Beatles never existed, who (if anyone) would've started the rock revolution?"

Yes, I can see the point. However, it's hardly worth debating. The Beatles never asked for the attention they got, it was handed to them. The resentment is understandable, but try to let it fall to the media instead of them. It's a fact that they were brilliant songwriters, and that they came up with studio techniques that no one had used before. They were innovative, and they gave a lot of people a lot of hope. They did us a favor, let's thank them for it.
P.S. I do believe they were the greatest band in history, but what the heck. To each his own. (But can you really compare them to NSYNC?)

I wasn't comparing the Beatles as a band, as people, or as a legacy to N'SYNC. I was merely pointing out that N'SYNC has hysterical fans much like Beatlemania did, and nobody is really confusing their fame with talent. I think we see a little bit of that with the Beatles.

You can't compare The Beatles and N'Sync...

The Beatles= Most innovative, influential band in the history of rock

N'Sync= Manufactured, dog ****

...and In the end the love you take is equal to the love you make

You must know that when the Beatles came on the scene all there was at the time were girl groups, Bobby Vinton and the like! So boring!!!!!!!They really gave music the shot in the arm that was needed! I know! I was there! As to the Kinks and other British bands....... they were good but wouldn't have made it without the Beatles being there first! Anything British was totally cool then! Agree or disagree , that's the way it was!

The old Rock 'n' Roll was dieing out around the time the beatles came over. The old rock, Elvis, Chuck Berry, ect., was being replaced by, as NEWHART FAN said, those boring "girl groups" and such. The Beatles came over and, in less than ten years, changed the face of music!!
