Well the idiots at Sony just announced "Bridget Loves Bernie" a one season failure from the early 1970's....hmmm don't even remember seeing this one listed at their bogus Sony voting website......I have lost all my patience nearly waiting 2 years since "One Day At A Time" was hinted at for release. "Bridget" wasn't even in the recent "Ladies Night" trailer on the "Facts" DVD which hinted at Maude, One Day & Mary Hartman. Maybe towards the end of the year we will see at least one of those released but I seriously doubt it!

..."BRIDGET LOVES BERNIE" was somewhat of a ratings success following "ALL IN THE FAMILY" on Saturday nights in the 1972-'73 season, but CBS did not want to renew the series because of the controversy surrounding it. It doesn't matter now, but the idea of presenting a Jewish-Catholic marriage (even in a fictional context) on TV back then did not appeal to EVERYONE, and the network got too many letters and complaints saying so. And there were some people who claimed the show was a '70s version of "Abie's Irish Rose", the seriocomic play that was a resounding hit on Broadway in the '20s, but flopped as a radio show AND movie in the '40s.
So the 24 episodes of the series will be released on DVD, without a whisper of protest! Who knows? Perhaps SONY will release "ONE DAY AT A TIME" soon...there are nine seasons' worth. Patience, I guess......

First let me say Knowledge I always read and enjoy your very insightful factual posts, but just to clarify I called "Bridget Loves Bernie" a one season failure (I actually have nothing against the show) not because of its actual ratings as explained in your reply, but because a network cancellation is still a cancellation.....when a network gives the greenlight to a series they hope it will last more than a season, I'm sure the ratings were fair for the time but as for controversy, there wasn't a more controversial series at the time than it's lead in "All in The Family" with many affliates refusing to air the series.... So it's place in history would still be considered a failure with not enough episodes for syndication, etc. Funny after all these years money is still trying to be recouped! The main point of the post was the bogus Sony website vote for your favorite to be released on DVD poll. As the results don't ever match what is actually released, not that I ever believed my votes would matter, it's nice to think they do. Anyway keep up the amazing insightful factual replies as it is very refreshing to read things from someone who really knows TV history like yourself!

I say the following with tongue firmly planted in cheek, but I do find it odd that "Family" has been officially announced by Sony but at this time "Bridget Loves Bernie" is still a just a rumor...maybe my rant killed it, which of course I don't believe but seriously I am a very passionate life long classic TV fan but how many people would have bought "Bridget Loves Bernie" on DVD?, I think if it sold 500 units it would be alot.

Well it is official and the DVD release of Bridget Loves Bernie has definately been removed from the Sony release schedule......I actually kinda feel a little guilty....lol......anyway now it is time for Sony to redeem itself and give us a definative release date by October 1 for "One Day At A Time" Seasons 1 & 2 combined. C'mon guys you can do it!

Not sure if you have Comcast on Demand but u wouldn't need seasons 1 and 2 of One day at a Time on DVD because both seasons were completed on there. |
