Here's an article which has me worried about the fate of my Starsky and Hutch Season FOUR (THE FINAL GOSH DARN ONE!), apparently if a show has a 30% drop off from season to season there is a chance it can get the ax! The weird thing is some of the shows I am waiting for are released in the UK, like S&H season 4. What's that all about? If they took the time to press it why not just encode it for the states? I mean, it IS an AMERICAN SHOW!!!

the studios are just in it for the quick buck, they would re-release Seinfeld or Friends in twelve different types of packaging before they'd continue season releases of any show that didn't have blockbuster sales in the first week.
the part that bugs me is that they seem to be shooting themselves in the foot by releasing multiple similar shows on the same day - not every fan can afford to buy 3 or 4 different $30-$50 sets in the same week, and if they base all of their initial sales and future expectations on this they are just begging for them to fail. (or at least severely underperform what they could potentially do) Take next weeks "Superday" for example, 6 Superman related shows, and even though I'm a fan, I wont buy any of them for months because there's too many that week (not to mention that I'll be getting the 4th seasons of Mary Tyler Moore and NewsRadio on that day). I think the show that will really suffer the most will be Superboy - its a GREAT show, but it will be buried by all those other releases that day. |

There really isn't any excuse for a studio not to license out additional seasons of a show to smaller companies. They'd still be making money on it and they wouldn't have to go through the effort of doing it themselves. Especially is the company is under the same ownership, like Shout Factory is to Sony and Rhino to Warner.

That was definitely an interesting article.
I don't think they'll *never* release other sets of Murphy, and Everwood, etc., they'll all probably be released well after the more popular selling shows are finished. IMO, of course. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking ... lol. Too bad they couldn't do like online sales. Granted, putting the DVDs in Wal-Mart, Target, etc. give it more exposure, but if they marketed them solely on the internet, maybe sales could increase or at least be considered "good enough." Just a thought. |

I'm still holding out hope for seasons 2 and 3 of American Dreams
Other shows that seem to have stopped after 1 season include Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley But you never know - The Mary Tyler Moore Show had YEARS between seasons 1 & 2, but then rolled out 3 and then 4 (coming out Tues) soon after season 2 so you never know!! |

I think once the top tier shows are released-I love lucy, Andy Griffith, Three's Company and other shows then I think companies will look at maybe picking up shows that they dropped. I think the case can be made that sometimes the first season of a show is not the best but continues to get better. I think people would be hungry for the second seasons to come out too. Maybe next year these big companies would pick up some of these orphaned shows. I would love to see more Barney Miller and Nightcourt. And Laverne and Shirley and Mork and Mindy. I do like it when the smaller companies do the dvd sets though. I thought the Dick Van Dyke Show was excellant and That Girl. Does anyone have the Twilight Zone and is that good? I think it is pretty expensive though. Thank you.

I agree Bertha. Like I said, I too believe once the top tier shows are released and completed, I think studios will revist other shows that did okay just not good enough. If not they need to ship their properties elsewhere.
I do admit I hesitate buying a show until I hear about a second season, btu frankly, if you like the show - BUY IT! It only helps the sales. I bought most of the TV favorites releases that came out and I'll buy the others too (Step by Step and Alice). I'd love to see more Barney Miller, Murphy Brown, Night Court, Mork & Mindy, Growing Pains and Laverne & Shirley. (I have the first seasons of all of those except M&M, L&S and NC). And you brought up MTM ... Charlie's Angels was the same way. I think it's been two years since the second season was released. If not it FEELS that long... and now the third season is FINALLY coming out. I'll know start buying the sets (I didn't before cause I had most of the episodes taped from TV Land). I was surprised to hear That Girl S2 was coming out so soon after S1! Pleasantly, of course. And Dick Van Dyke was released at RAPID speed. One show I REALLY want on DVD is Adam West's "Batman". And kinda going off topic, I wonder how "The Facts of Life" did in sales.... |
