I'm so lost right now - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I'm 21, and I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. I don't have any interests and I'm not good at anything. I was a sacker at a grocery store for awhile, but no way am I doing that for the rest of my life. Any ideas as to what I should do?

Maybe you could be a teacher?

Some parts of the job look fun, and it looks like it could be quite an enjoyable job. I also really like my school's atmosphere (I'm not a teacher, mind you, just a student.) I really like school, anyway, and my teachers. And there's usually quite a high demand for teachers.

That's ok, you can do that for a while, which may lead to different things. There's no rule that says you have to have one career for the rest of your life.

I really love what I do for a living but I don't think I'll do it forever.

I'm older than you and in the same boat. I am 37 yrs. old and not quite sure what to do with my life. I'm still thinking about which college program to take and to get a degree in what field; I'm still undecided and it's frustrating.

Girl....you sound like me!!! I can't count how many times I have said to myself, "You don't know how to do anything." I have a BA, 2 Certificates, and am still taking classes...and yet I can't do anything. At least apparently not since I can't get any employers to call me back for an interview. I've told myself that if this medical thing doesn't work, I'm toast, because I don't have any interest in anything either. And since I can't do anything...that leaves retail or something. No way in hell do I want to do that again.

I feel like such a failure. Half of it is my fault and half is the world's fault. I try so hard to be what people want, but no matter what I do, I get ignored.

Sorry....got off on a tangent. Anyway, I know exactly how you feel. If you ever need to vent, I'm here.

Thank you! Today I went out to get job applications and every place told me that they were accepting applications after I asked if they are hiring. Truthfully that sounds like code for, we are not hiring right now.

You know, that's really sad. I know people who are in the exact same situation. They spend all this time and money going to college and when they graduate they can't find a job, or at least one they like. They are pushing 30 and still living in a small apartment struggling just to get by. All our lives we are told if we study hard and go to college we will get a good job and be happy and successful but for so many people that is just not the case. I'm beginning to think that for a lot of people, trade school is the best way to go. At least you actually learn how to do something. My husband and 2 of my brothers did that and they have never been out of work and they really love what they do and the best thing is that they learned skills that they can use at home as well as the workplace.

After I graduated from college, I joined the Americorp. It's an organization helps people in disadvantaged areas. You get paid a stipend(very low pay because you are supposed to live like the population you are serving.) and if you complete the program for a year, you receive an educational award or a check. It's your choice. Also, if you are interested in teaching, there's Teach For America. That's a good program that allows you to teach in disadvantaged areas. You are paid an actual teacher's salary. It could be good or bad thing depending on where you live. Those are just a few suggestions if you want to go that route.

I got my BA too, and it took me a yr to find a great paying job. It seem like nowadays you have to have a BA just for a Secertarial job

. So now in September I'm going back to school to get my Masters. So it's hard to actually find a job that pays well enough that you can actually live on.

Truth is you do have to have a BA nowadays just to be a secretary. My mom is one, and she helps her boss hire new secretaries sometimes and they have to have a BA. Funny thing is that my mom doesn't have one. She's been doing it for so long, and she's great at it! Actually she's been doing it for a long time, and makes twice the amount that an average secretary normally makes.

As far as being a teacher, I doubt I could do that. I don't like kids that much really. I had even thought of going into nursing, until I tried and failed my first class that I needed. In a way I guess that I worry that I'll end up being like my dad. He went to school and became a cop. He did that for like 2 years, and he hated it! He ended up going into security work and has been doing that since. It's hard watching him because he hates what he does and is really depressed. I don't want to end up like that.

You're right. My niece is a dental hygienist. She went to a two-year school. It was a grueling course. She earned an Associates Degree. She makes $45 an hour. I wouldn't want to clean teeth for a living, but for her, it's perfect. She's pregnant with their second child. She works two and half days a week and makes a bundle.

Electricians, HVAC techs, plumbers, carpenters, mechanics...they make good money. College isn't for everyone.
