Does anyone else view the year as starting in September? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Since I'm just finishing school this year, to me, although I know the proper beginning of the year is 1st January, I've always seen the year as beginning in September (which is when kids in the UK go back to school) and ending in late July (which is when kids in the UK break up from school for the summer holiday.) I've always seen August as a kind of in-between month. To me, early September is the beginning of the year; I just always see it that way.

Does anyone else hold the same view?

I used to view the year as starting in September when I went to school. I've always felt like August is like the end of the year. It 's funny how the school year made me think of the year that way, but I guess it's not that unusual to think of the year that way. It's funny. I thought I was the only one who thought that.

I used to. But now as an adult...you live for the end of the year. More time off!

Yah thats how a view it. I guess most teens and kids view it that way.

British kids get six weeks' summer holiday; in America, you get about 9 or 10, right?

In most areas, it's 10. In some areas, you can have as much as 12 weeks off from school. Mine was like that...For example, I finished my junior year in high school on May 22, 2002 and then I started my senior year in high school on August 26, 2002. I got one additional week to my summer break that year, because schools around here usually start on the third Monday in August, as long as it is on the 20th or later. The third Monday of August in 2002 was the 19th, so we got an extra week of summer vacation because of that.

Wow. I suppose six weeks holiday must sound quite short to most people in America, then.

In the UK, we break up in late July (around 20th July) and return in early September (around the 4th or 5th September.) I've always seen the year as starting 1st September, as by that time, I've been getting everything ready to prepare to go to school.
