Default Death and Dysfunction on Tv

Ever notice how all the famiies in that time period of 70's 80's
are damaged/dysfunctional or surrounded by death?

brady bunch-both widows
partridge family-widow
courtship of eddies father widow-
whats happening-widow
webster-parents died
silver spoons-mother abandoned ricky
double trouble-parents were gone? if i recall correctly
8 is enough-widow
good times, father died

I could keep going but you get the point.

Hmmm

on WHATS HAPPENING! there was a father, MAMA was not a widower, she was divorced and her ex showed up in a few episodes

on DOUBLE TROUBLE they had a dad for the 1st season, dont recall his name, grey haired actor, BUT they moved away for season 2

(GEE I have too much time on my hands!)

PS i remember one episodes of WHATS HAPPENING! where Mama had to work on a holiday, CHRISTMAS or THANKSGIVING not sure which, so Raj and Dee were going to have dinner with their father and his new girlfriend (WHO LOOKED A LOT BETTER THAN MAMA!!!)
and she ended up NOT having to work and was all alone, BUT then the new girl ruined dinner, so they all came over and Mama fed them all!

very weird!

Ok your a bona fide couch potato---Ill resign on the two you mentioned- but still divorce-

I could also add Alice- she was a widow with a 12 year old son
Wasn't empty nest, wasn't he a widow?
Archie Bunkers place ? Widow
Gimmie a break- Widow
Sanford and Son....Widow?
Chico and the man---Ed was the widow
Diffrent Strokes-Widow

Serously I can keep going.

I guess in the sum of ALL shows ever done- It isn't a lot.
But for the time period mentioned it seems a really huge overrun theme.

You don't find that be a lot of death/divorce etc for an area of years?

It's TV shorthand for divorce. Ever noticed how many widowed men there are bringing up families on TV?

how about poor ermie on my three sons

his parents died and left him at a orphanage

then his foster parents moved and couldnt take ernie along

so steve douglas adopted him, and his dog wilson

then of course after a couple shows wilson is written off

so ernie lost his real parents

then lost his foster parents

then was adopted by a widower

then he lost his dog

poor ernie had it rough

Even into the 90's. and cartoons
Full House... Widower
Step By Step...Both divorced
My 2 Dads...Mom died
Voyagers...Parents died
City Guys... Mom died
One World... Bunch of adopted kids

Static Shock... Widower
Goof Troop... No mom in the picture
Weekenders... Tino's mom was divorced
Pepper Ann... No dad in the picture

Plus (I know this is about TV, But) Every freaking Disney Movie has a dead or missing parent

He had it rough just going through life with those goofy glasses, bad haircut and annoying voice!

OK. Here's one that does not fit into that category. Happy Days. That is, until son Chuck disappears. It's wierd how they never seem to mention him again. I believe he was supposed to have gone off to college. Did he die? Maybe he came out of the closet and they disowned him.
