BOTH!

Again, just as was pointed out that Whitesnake and Guns N' Roses do not compare, to a true fan who is knowledgeable in both these bands, (as I am) they are really quite different.

I realize it is easy to assume that they are the same, just from different continents: They both originally had 5 members (although the Stones only have four now), both have langly, large-lipped, slightly gender-bending frontmen, both have well known lead guitarists, both have catchy nicknames for the pair of the frontman and the lead guitarist (Jagger and Richards of the Stones are the Glimmer Twins while Tyler and Perry of Aerosmith are [aptly] called the Toxic Twins), both have had more than their share of drug problems.

However, the similarities end with appearances. Musically, they are very different.

The Stones' music is much more controversial (at least they were in the '60s and '70s) and the Stones are much more bluesy, and have more R&B influence. The Stones are also flashier, while Aerosmith is a bit darker (although Aerosmith has become more flashy as of late, whereas the Stones have grown darker).

Aerosmith is great ol' rock n' roll, and they play more ballads. Aerosmith also has alot more going on in their music, from the signature harmonica to piano, accordion, stings, sitar, hurdy gurdy, slide guitar, brass, clarinet and saxophone. Aerosmith also has more unusual musical stylings, such as filtering Tyler's vocals through machines to distort his voice. Additionally, Aerosmith is raunchier, but not in a bad way.

I will not deny that Aerosmith may have been at least in part influenced by the Stones. But no more so than they were influenced by the Yardbirds, the Beatles, soul, and blues.

I love both bands. The Stones, Aerosmith and Guns N' Roses are my favorite bands of all time.

Sorry to go off on a tangent with y'all, but the insistence that the Stones and Aerosmith are different sides of the same coin is false and has always been a pet peeve of mine.

Bootsy, I could not have said it better myself! Thanks for saving me from typing that all out.

I also want to point out that what was said here can also be moved over to the Motley Crue vs. Pantera subject, as it is the same comparison there. Some bands cannot compare.

AEROSMITH!!!!!!!I musta missed the Motley Crue/Pantera debates. However,I think its safe to assume if they had a fight Pantera would be the victors!

Both! Although I prefer both in their earlier days, The Stones especially.

And I agree with Bootsy to a T. Bootsy, it's great to have someone on the board who's as passionate about rock as I am.

Any road, here are my top five albums from both bands:

The Rolling Stones:
Beggar's Banquet (1968)
Sticky Fingers (1971)
Exile On Main Street (1972)
Let It Bleed (1969)
The Satanic Majesties Request (1967)

Aerosmith
Toys In The Attic (1975)
Rocks (1976)
Aerosmith (1973)
Get Your Wings (1974)
Nine Lives (1997)

Being familiar with that musical legacy, it was depressing to me when I saw the Mick Jagger, David Bowie video "Dancin' in the Streets". What the hey were they thinking?

"What the hell, Dave. I've already washed away half of my credibility by prancing around in purple stretch pants in the "Start Me Up" video. Let's throw the rest of it away!"

"OK. Just as long as I get to make 'Labyrinth' in a couple of years."
