Their well-organized and motherly nurse, Carolyn Jacobs (Debra Jo Rupp) must work side-by-side at the front desk with their office assistant (secretary/receptionist), Bree Bradley (Juliette Lewis), who's a ex-stripper with three children from different deadbeat dads. Also, Nina's on-again, off-again fiancee, Jack Geller (George Clooney) shows up and makes appearances. Ep1: Pilot Episode:
John must treat an angry patient (Ed Asner) who's in denial about his heart condition being so severe as it is. Nina must help deliver her old boyfriend's new wife's baby-much to her dismay (after seeing how happy he is now with his new wife and baby-which makes her jealous). Meanwhile, Rick and Renee return from their summer in Europe.

Ep2: Summer's Over:
Rick must treat a 9-year-old boy who slammed his hand in the van's sliding door to get out of going back to school. Bree takes a personal day as she struggles to get her three children off to school for their first day-which turns into a big fight more than anything else. Carolyn learns about Nina's latest fiasco with Jack, which includes why Jack tries to push back their pending wedding date.

Ep3: Smokers Anonymous:
John begins to feel like a hypocrite when he lectures a patient (Bea Arthur) about her smoking even after being diagnosed with lung cancer. John feels guilty and attends a Smokers Anonymous one night--which stuns all of his co-workers. Carolyn tries to be supportive for John, as the rest make light of the situation. Nina gives Jack one more chance after he admits he is still unsure that marriage is right for him.

Ep4: Banquet Night:
The doctor office, along with other Boston doctor offices attend Boston's annual doctor banquet dinner. John, Rick, Renee, Nina, Jack, Carolyn, and Bree all attend. Bree bumps into a man from her past--her 12-year-old son's birthdad who she hasn't seen since he left her when their son was 9 months old. Carolyn advices Bree to seek child support from him, which is what Bree is in dire need of (money!).

Ep5: Liars and Mothers: Part One
Nina is asked to be a surrogate mother for Jack's brother and his wife. Nina is flattered yet unsure of what her answer should be. To make matters worse, Jack is away on business for the weekend and his brother and sister-in-law would like an answer ASAP. Meanwhile, John and Carolyn must put up with an annoying patient, Sue (Maggie Wheeler) who "believes" she is stricken with cancer, but has a history of making symptons up. Just to shut up the female patient, John agrees to take some tests.

Ep6: Tests Positive: Part Two
John informs Carolyn first that Sue is for once for real about her having cancer. The tests show Sue has a mild case of stomach cancer. John and Carolyn break the news to Sue, who to their surprise-remains strong yet devastated. Meanwhile, Nina agrees to being a surrogate mother for Jack's brother and his wife. Yet Nina learns she can't be a surrogate mother due to the fact that she is already 2 and half weeks pregnant (with Jack's child). Nina is stunned and floored.

Ep7: Money and Fathers:
Rick and Renee get the news of her longtime widowered father having a massive heart attack. Rick and Renee (and kids) fly out to California to be with Renee's dad (James Garner). Her dad dies minutes after Renee, Rick, and the grandkids arrive. Rick and Renee soon learn that he left them a large sum of money in his will.
