His name was John Tenta.
Earthquake John Tenta, who had battled cancer for the past two years, passed away this morning at the age of 43. Tenta was a college wrestler at Lousiana State University, who was recruited into the sport of sumo in Japan. He had a long win streak early on against lower competition, but never became a superstar in the sport. But as a huge American (although he was actually from British Columbia, Canada), he gained a name in that country and was given a big contract by Giant Baba to join All Japan Pro Wrestling, where he was pushed from the start. A big fan of pro wrestling, particularly the Road Warriors, Tenta moved to WWF, where he headlined in a long program with Hulk Hogan. He also had a long run with WCW as a member of the Dungeon of Doom. His battle with cancer had been well documented, as he had kept a regular journal for years on his ups and downs in his battle on the Wrestlecrap web site. |

This is very sad news. I use to love to watch him and Typhoon as the Natural Disasters, back during their feuds with Money Inc., and The Nasty Boys in the early 90's. Those were good times. From reading what many of his fellow wrestlers and associates have had to say about him on WWE.com, it seems obvious to me that in real life, he was the exact opposite of the mean monster he often played on tv, but was a truly gentle Giant in real life. R.I.P. Earthquake, you'll be missed!!!
