Old school Metallica (prior to that awful 1992 black album).

I would say Metallica before thier crappy 1988 album they digitally mixed and it sounds like crapola!!

Thier producer wasnt there for the mixing and they stupidly ruined the whole album.......

They got 3 good analogue records though!!

Kill Am All
Master of puppets
Ride the lightning

Cool

It's a strange confrontation. After Cliff Burton died, many people felt that Metallica lost their direction, and yet with 1991's so-called 'Black Album', that became inexplicably their "finest hour". But Pantera redefined metal, at least in the minds of many with something so abrasive with 'Cowboys From Hell" (1990) and 'Vulgar Display Of Power' (1992). While Metallica's phase in the early 90's was considered a "softening" of metal from their 80's thrash roots, Pantera's groove metal in the early 90's had re-established it. Metallica was trying to re-invent itself with the Bon Jovi-esque "Enter Sandman" and the ballad "Nothing Else Matters" while Pantera gave us the edgier "Mouth For War" and "Walk".

Cool

In some ways Metallica was a better band in the 90's because often Pantera tried so hard to be so edgy and abrasive. Sometimes Pantera nailed it, while other times they became extreme for the sake of being extreme. "Floods" was a great song, and their cover of "Planet Caravan" showed they could have a mellow side.

Metallica had certain expectations from fans since their 80's thrash days, and their attempts to be "Alternapaloozika" in the 90's was hit and miss.
