The haunted-house devilry of "Stephen King's `Rose Red' " is conjured anew in a prequel based on the bestselling novel by Ridley Pearson.
This 2003 TV-adaptation traces the origins of supernatural activity menacing a Seattle mansion in the early 1900s. The story unfolds from the viewpoint of Ellen Rimbauer (Lisa Brenner), the submissive wife of a philandering oil magnate (Steven Brand) who makes her life miserable. Out of fear and loneliness, Ellen bonds with a servant named Sukeena (Tsidii Le Loka), an African-born woman attuned to the "untapped powers" of the mansion. On a re-creation of the Bundys' living-room set, cast members recall working on the lowbrow and delightfully dysfunctional sitcom (1987-97) that became the fledgling Fox network's first success. "It's the first time the cast (Ed O'Neill, Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate, David Faustino, Amanda Bearse, Ted McGinley and David Garrison) have all been together since the show ended," says producer Charles Duncombe. Of course it wouldn't be a retrospective without clips, and the actors will also talk about the show's abrupt cancellation. That plan begins to take shape in Westport, Conn., where she launches a catering business, and as it grows, the cozy “perfect family” image Martha so zealously projects comes to mean far more to her than her actual family.
