That's what Florence was offered to take the job as the Executive Housekeeper at St. Fredericks Hotel. Florence was so excited by making that much money. This episode was in 1981. Was $26,000 that much back then? What the heck was she making at the Jeffersons? lol

I'm just guessing here, but 26 grand seems about right for a housekeeper 25 years ago. You could probably double that today. Perhaps she was getting $20,000 from the Jeffersons, but that included a place to live.

I don't know. Just tossing out some thoughts here. There's got to be an online salary chart somewhere.

$26,000 divided by 52 weeks is $500 a week, yeah, that was a lot in 1981!

That's some decent money by today's standard. Back then, it was probably like $50,000.

Oh ok, I was just curious because two things jumped out at me...

1. I couldn't help but compare it to today's standards.

2. I'm trying to imagine what she was making with the Jeffersons if this was a huge pay jump for her.

Florence was indeed getting a really good salary. Does anyone here besides TVResearcher watch Fresh Prince? Because there was an episode where Geoffrey, their butler, quit because his pay was too low and Uncle Phil was taking him for granite. When Geoffrey returned to settle it with Phil and Vivian, he said I will not come back for more than $80 dollars a week. Vivian then said he would be getting $100 dollars a week. Now I do not know if the Banks family had more or less money than The Jeffersons, but that is not a really good salary. That show was on in the early 1990s, and Florence was making $500 a week in the early 1980s. More proof that she was getting damn good pay!

Plus Florence was a live-in Maid too. She didn't have to worry about paying rent.

$100 a week isn't all that much, $150 a week sounds bit better

But it was still a fair amount to get paid a week. He probably didn't have to rent, he had no bills to pay and had all the food he could eat at his finger tips.

Florence didn't have to look after kids either, cleaning up after kids, doing their laundry, etc. But my understanding is that a maid does ALL KINDS OF WORK, a butler just tends to certain things.

That's true, but on Fresh Prince Geoffrey cleaned and cooked, so he was a male maid.

Do we know that Florence made that much? Brian's original post was that she was offered that at a hotel. I don't think she would be able to live at the hotel -- so that salary, while still good by 1981 standards, would have have to pay for a roof over her head.

I'd like to know what the Jeffersons were paying Florence. She didn't have to worry about rent, food, laundry, she wore a uniform, and I'd say that health insurance is part of a professional maid's compensation package.
