Default Anyone has been to family functions where it has been all in a clique?

This past Memorial's Day, I spent time with relatives at a park. It was some interactions, but everybody was in a clique. People only hung with the relatives they knew and only felt comfortable with. I didn't like this, because I hadn't seen most of these folks in a while, and some of them I never knew or met. I only stayed about 3 hours. That's 3 hours too long. No one seemed like they wanted to get to know or meet other family members.

We had a reunion like that a few years back. They don't work. Like you said, cliques, cliques and more cliques. Gossip, gossip and cheap talk. I hate it. No one wants to interact.

I went to a family reunion at a cousins house last summer and there were no real "cliques". Only the younger people tend to hang around each other and the older people stayed inside and talked most of the time. I hung around the older people since I feel like a old married woman half the time

It's too bad it has to be like that. Family members should treat each other with more respect.

I Dont know my dad's side at all. they are kind of really reserved, and they dont talk alot, nor do they communicate with us. I barely know my grandparents, I just think they are nice because they send money for birthdays and such. Now my mom's side, we are a really tight knit family. We are cliquish in away though because the 2nd and 3rd cousins families are really really odd, and we all wonder how the hell we are related to them in the first place LOL. I k now that sounds awful, but its true. I am sorry you felt that way though, families should at least give each other a chance.

All the time. On my maternal side of the family, it's ten siblings (my mom, four aunts and five uncles). They all vary in ages from mid-50s down to early 30s. It seems my two youngest aunts spend the most time together, and my mom (the oldest sister/sibling) and my two oldest aunts tend to spend the most time together. Not to mention that those two youngest aunts of mine are jerks. My youngest aunt is ignoring my mom for stupid reasons where she believes her husband over my mom (her OWN flesh and blood sister), so now she and my second-youngest aunt aren't speaking with my mom. Blah to stupid relatives.

I think there will always be cliques happening in families, unfortunately. It does make it difficult when it comes to gatherings and/or parties.

My family isn't big enough.

Last time we had any decent sized gathering like that was my 2nd (or 3rd...I have no idea) cousin's HS graduation. But we mingled with the Kansas relatives and they mingled with us, so it was okay.

Family drama is awful! We have a situation where they hate my moms one side of the family, and its not cool. my dads side avoids my mom's side all the time, and i dont know why because personally, i love my mom's side more than my fathers. Its immature, really.

It happens at our family gatherings too, the younger ones under 25 hang
together and everyone else hangs together.
