okay, was i bad Dad because I took Me Myself and I to an R rated movie last night? I took her to see Bridget Jones Diary...some swears and some sexual situations. I'm ready for the praise or criticisms....just an aside...we had a really good time and I don't regret it

I do not think that it matters, as long as you think that it is alright, i mean i am almsot 15 and i can see whatever i wanted for the most part, and my first rated R movie i am pretty sure was in 2nd grade, SPEED, the first one

I saw that movie and if I was 10 I would have been allowed to watch it. My parents were very leniant with most R rated movies. I can't tell you how many times I saw Major League when I was little. Another movie is Dirty Dancing. My sister and I watched that a few years ago after not seriously watching it for a long time. Afterwards, we were amazed that we were allowed to watch it at our ages of about 5 and 7 almost every day one summer. We asked our Mom and she said we didn't understand anything that went on so what was the harm? Pretty truthful when your 5 and 7, but there's nothing obscene in Bridget Jones's diary for a 10 year old that you don't already see in daytime soaps or primetime shows.

You guys have a really odd way of rating movies in the States! 'Bridget Jones's Diary' only got a '15' rating in Scotland - basically, you can go see it, unaccompanied, if you are over 14.
You have to be over 17 to see an 'R' movie, right?

ACtually, it's over 18 to see an R rated movie. I think it depends on the movie. Some movies are rated R just for the deep story, not for sexual situations or Violence. For example: Matrix, I think it was just a hard story to understand, so it may be a bit over children's heads, not much violence, and no sexuality. On the other hand : The 6th day. I think that could have easily been rated R. Sexuality, violence (more than matrix) that would make some ladies cringe.

So, I think that the rating system needs a little bit of help these days. Frankly, I can't believe that "Coyote Ugly" wasn't R either! Talk about sexual content!

My parents were always really strict when it came to R rated movies. And I could have killed them for it. I mean, when I was 11, I wanted to see Pretty Woman. I was't allowed. Why? Becase it had a prostitute in it. I mean REALLY, do you think that because I see a movie with a prostitute in it I'm going to become one? No. I wasn't allowed to watch R-rated movies until the week before my 13th birthday. Since tomorrow is my 14th birthday, I've only been allowed to watch them for a year. And that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. And what annoys me is that I'll see previews for a movie that looks really good, and then it'll be rated R. So I'll wait for it to come out on video and when it does I have no idea whatsoever why it was rated R. Quite frankly, I think they rate movies R just to annoy me. The way they rate movies I'm surprised that The Lion King wasn't rated R. Oh, that lion dies, little kids might think they should kill cats. Rate it R! it makes me so mad that they don't trust teenagers.

they should change the ratings because they are sorta out dated it should be G, PG, and like R should be lowered to something reasonable like 15 ish, buti mean everyone is like o it should be r because kids wont understand it but i mean it may have just been my town but we understood things but i dont give a crap bout ratings because where i live if a parent or someone over 18 buys u the tickets or gives permission to let u see the movie u can...and btw pg-13 is a joke because anyone can get in without an adult!

I don't think that it's bad to see an R rated movie, even if you are under 17. I have been watching R movies since I was 10 or 11. My parents really didn't care. Some movies that are rated R should (IMHO) seen by kids. Examples: Any teenager should see Traffic, just to see how drugs screw up your life. On the other hand, Scary Movie was one of the most perverted movie, and kids definetly should not see that. Road Trip was pretty gross too. I agree with The T that it depends on the movie. Some movies, like Saturday Night Fever, have a R and a PG version.

well i'm almost 14 and the only R-rated movie i saw was "Scream". al though @ the time my parents weren't around and i thought it was PG-13. i'm not aloowed to see R-rated movies..my parents are really strict about that and what i watch on TV....i'm hardly ever allowed to watch MTV

Hardly ever? I'm flat-out NOT allowed to watch it. At all. My sister wasn't allowed to watch it until she was 16. But really, that one I don't care about because if it isn't 50s, 60s, 70s, or showtune music... I don't like it.

Actually, it's over 17, not 18.

And you think the Matrix wasn't very violent?? Did you SEE that movie? What about the ending climax part with big weapons and shooting up whole buildings? THAT'S why it was rated R. And the 6th day was not more violent than the Matrix. I think you must have a weird definition of what constitutes violence.

Don't worry if you're not allowed to watch MTV..you're not missing much. VH1 has all the good stuff (I ALWAYS watch Movies that Rock!) MTV only plays boy bands/teen sluts/rap. They don't play anything good, but Vh1 has a top ten countdown with GOOD music and yeah it's just better

The same thing happened to me. I was allowed to watch Three's Company when I was about 6 or 7. Then I saw it again in college and I couldn't believe I was allowed to watch it. But then I realized what your mom realized. I didn't understand half of it. All the sexual jokes and innuendos went right over my head.

HerDaddy: I don't think there's anything wrong with taking your daughter to an R-rated movie. The important thing is that you were there with her. I think that if the parents judge the movie ok for their kids then there is nothing wrong with it. As we all know there are big differences in R-rated movies and some are NOT appropriate for children but others are fine for some kids.
