Default Did any of the actors get an award their work on FOL?

I was hoping some of you might be able to tell me if Lisa, Charlotte, Nancy, Kim or Mindy got an award or awards for their acting.

I went to a Kim and a Lisa site but neither mentioned any awards. I think Lisa and Mindy were absolutely amazing and the best of the 5, but I thought Kim Fields did extremely well at just 10 and 11 years of age. I think it would have been tough for Kim Fields character to be a favorite of many people as the character didn’t really have something that stood out too much as being different from the other 4 and I mean character wise not skin color wise. She was just the cute young kid. Whereas in terms of what stood out Mrs Garrett was the kind patient house mother, Jo was the tough funny smart alec (she mellowed a bit), Natalie was the sweet friendly funny one and Blair was the gorgeous conceited hilarious one. Well that’s as I see it after watching season 2.

Charlotte Rae did a very professional job on bringing her character to the screen and making her loveable. And Nancy was great in the role of Jo with an area or two that could be improved on. I’ll be interested to see if that happens in latter seasons. I would guess she well and truly got on top of that seeing as she later (is still doing?) did another series.

Charlotte Rae was nominated for an Emmy one year and didn't win.

The girls were all nominated for something that is called the "Young Artist Awards" and often were nominated against each other. It is for young performers 18 and under in television and movies and they were all pretty much nominated regularly until they turned 18.

I believe though all were nominated, only Kim and Nancy won. Kim twice and Nancy once for FOL and another for the FOL Paris movie.

As far as acting, I think they were all pretty on par with each other at the time the show began. Though I do think Mindy developed one of the best senses for comedy as the show went on, she was the "greenest" in the early days when it came to things like cracking herself up and sometimes breaking character. The others had many acting credits under their belt by the time they were hired for FOL. Don't get me wrong...Mindy was great and is awesome and a truly underrated comedienne, but she had the most to learn in the early seasons.

I'll see if I can find the links for the Young Artist Awards though.

Okay, found it.

Lisa also nominated for the TV Movie "Twirl"

I never thought Mindy was out of character or cracked herself up. That's why I was so surprised to hear Lisa say this on the DVD. I just always thought of Natalie as a cut-up who always "cheesed" for an invisible camera when she made her jokes, like a funny part of her character. And I guess it also didn't stand out ot me since this was the '80s, and overly-done expressions and reactions were very "in" in lots of the sitcoms back then.

I thought it was more noticeable with Mindy in the first season, shall we say her inexperience. But that was to be expected. She wasn't a professional kid at that point and fresh out of high school whereas all the other kids on set were.

In the second season Mindy was more in control and did some excellent work. Her comedic timing is always there, but from what I've seen Mindy has excellent comedic timing in real life too. There where a few times where she was very close to cracking up--which kind of works, like Mindy said in the DVD. It works because Nat doesn't take herself so seriously, but I don't think it was intended or written into the script either.

On the subject of awards, I did a little more research into FOL girls winning awards.

Since FOL, the girls still in the business have all picked up nominations for various things.

Mindy was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2003 for her voice over work on Scooby Doo.

Kim was nominated for an NAACP award for her work on Living Single.

Nancy was nominated for Prism Awards (twice) for her work on The Division. Prism Awards are for the accurate depiction of drug and alcohol use in films, tv and books. She also won some sort of award for the short film she made in 2000.

Thanks Raya for all that info it was most interesting. Big hugs

The gals all have great acting ability as backed up by their awards and nominations. Sometime in the future I might get a copy of The Division and Living Single if they’re on DVD and have a nosey. I think we lost out on some great acting when Lisa decided to stop acting (pretty much), she could pull off conceited so humorously and at other times do dramatic so well as seen in Double Standard in the confrontation with Jo. Her acting just flowed from one from expression and tone to another. OK I admit it I like her acting.

Are you guys saying that LISA WHELCHEL didn t even win an award?!
And how did KIM FIELDS ended up winning 2 when it s obvious LISA was a lot better than her at acting?! (KIM was only great in season 1 & 2) but after that she lost her charm, whereas LISA was brilliant from season 1 to 9!
I m glad NANCY MCKEON won various awards cos she was brilliant too but i cannot understand why CHARLOTTE RAE didn t won many when we all know, she helped put the show together lol!
