Very Lazy if you ask me which is why the first season was ASS. I found in the 1972 TV guide that they used the steptoe and son scripts and didn't create new ones until season 2. Damm, no creaivity in season 1 at all which is why I don't recommend the DVD-lol

it does say at the end of the credits that the show is based on Steptoe and Son right?
Three's Company was also based on Man of the House, a british show. I think a lot of the 70's shows were taken from something else. AITF was also like that. God, there are so many. |

Hence the name, Sanford And Son. The First three seasons are my very favorite.

I didn't think season 1 was too bad, definitely better than the last season. Coffins for Sale and Here Comes the Bride, There Goes the Bride are two of my favorite episodes from the first season.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one who liked the first season.

I recommend you go back and watch the first season over again, because it was not as bad as you think it is. Don't you realize the title is "Sanford and Son?" meaning it going to start off with the two principle characters. Yeah, I preferred to see more characters, but this season is an exception, because Redd played off of Demond a lot and add-libbed. Plus, it had decent episodes. So just because you didn't like this season does not mean it was a bad one. |

...that, because "SANFORD AND SON" was picked up rather quickly by NBC as a mid-season replacement in 1972, there wasn't enough time to "hammer" out original scripts. So Aaron Ruben reworked some of Galton & Simpson's original "STEPTOE & SON" scripts for the new show as fast as he could, until he could "build" a regular writing staff, which he did by the following season.
But it worked. Foxx's input was a factor, I'm sure.

I don't think it matters. They were still hilarious because Redd Foxx could read the dictionary word for word and make it funny. In the episode where Lamont almost gets married, when he tells Lamont, "I ain't gone let this liver-lipped broad insult you" Steptoe and Son WISH they were that funny. Besides would any of us even know about Steptoe and Son if it weren't for Sanford?

But since it was just FRED AND LAMONT in season 1 that's why it was kind of DRY. Except for the eps when they had to pay bills-lol |
