Default Meeting people online, then meeting them in person.

What are your thoughts on this?

The reason I am asking is because I am leaving on a trip at the end of June.

I am flying to Oregon for a week. I met this girl almost 9 years ago. We have talked on the phone and we even send Christmas and birthday cards to each other. Well, circumstances have made it so that we can both meet. I am very excited about finally meeting her.

Now for the reason I am asking. My husband is very upset about my going there. He says that I am crazy and that I have no idea that this is an actual person. I laughed and said "No, I've been talking to a computer for the last 8 and a half years!"

I know I am going to have tons of fun and can't wait!!

I've met two people from here in real life and they were both sane. Though my mom did think that Jeff was a rapist and said, "IF HE ASKS YOU TO GO SOMEWHERE ALONE WITH HIM, DON'T GO."

But I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as you've known each other for a really long time.

Well, I met a fellow SO poster, Dutabi84, two weeks ago and I'm still posting. So is he. We'd been chatting for over two years prior to our meeting. But I still got asked by both parents -- constantly -- if I was hoping for something romantic to come out of the deal. First of all, he has a girlfriend and second of all, I don't look at him like THAT. He's more of a big brother to me.

As long as two internet buddies are careful about selecting the location of their first meeting, they really have nothing to worry about. If you guys REALLY are great friends, then everything will go smoothly.

I've met people in person from the online world. As some have already mentioned, the best thing to do is use common sense. You don't have to be too paranoid, but just be aware of your surroundings. What will help is the fact you have two have known each other for years, and you have also talked on the phone. So you have had some kind of common interaction going on for quite a while. Have fun finally meeting in person!

I'm going out with someone who I met online. She's beautiful, Ivy League educated, and is just an amazing woman. Had it not been for the internet, I never would have approached her, because I would have been intimidated, and felt she was out of my league, but meeting her online was the best decision I ever made!!

Anyway Michelle, I hope all goes well with you and your friend when you guys see each other. Enjoy my hometown of Portland!!

Me too! And I feel very fortunate because I probably never would have met someone like him around here. I'm shy and the only guys who have ever approached me were a-holes.

So I see nothing wrong with it. I'm sure this friend of yours is a real person (I mean, who gets Christmas cards from a computer?) and you'll have a blast. As long as, like was mentioned in another thread recently, you don't meet in a dark alley, or a creepy dude's basement, or a car....restaurants are good places to meet at first.

We've actually had a couple dates already, and she is a very normal woman. Actually, one of the most normal people Iv'e ever met, so fortunately I don't have to worry about that.

That really is cool that the two of you found each other Cathy. Not to get mushy or anything, but I love to hear that kind of stuff, and I hope your relationship will continue, and blossom into something even more wonderful!!

Thanks for all the comments. The weird thing is that I met one online friend here in FL about 3 years ago. She was here visiting her brother and brought her husband and kids. She is from Sweden, originally from the States and we decided to meet.

He had no problem with that. I guess it is because I am going to the other side of the country!! LOL!! Anyway, I am looking forward to it and can't wait!!

I've never done that before (cause I'm only 14 and my parents would NEVER let me do that!) but I will sometime in the future meet some of my online friends and maybe find a date online or a sex partner.
