Default Men and Doctors

I'm more interested in men with this poll, but ladies, feel free to say how you feel about it with yourself.

Do you men (or women with men in their lives) hate going to the doctor? I don't know what it is, but every guy in my life would almost rather get sick than go see a doctor. Why is that?!

My mom and I think my dad needs to have something looked at, but he's like, "It's fine." Like he's a doctor. We're going to have to actually make the appointment for him and probably forceably drag him to go see about it. I think that's terrible and I just totally don't get it.

So, anyone care to enlighten me?

Sad to say, as a guy, I'm like that too. I've thought about why that is true for me. I think deep down, it's a fear of the fallibility of doctors and the possibility of a mis-diagnosis--or, finding something else along the way, or finding out that what you have is serious and not wanting to face it. I know, it's very stupid. If it weren't for the urging of my wife and son for me to go to the doctor, I might not have survived a few things along the way. I'm getting wiser, hopefully, as I become older. Good luck with your situation.

I don't really like going. But that's mostly the lack of a lot of money and insurance. If I think I'll manage, and it's nothing serious, I won't go. But if people insist on me going to get something checked out, I'll go.

I'm definitely in the second category. I have to be pretty worried about something before I go to the doctor.

I only go to the doctor if I have to. I see the doctor every four or five months because he needs to check me out in order to renew certain medications that I take. So I am kind of forced into going. If I wasn't, I don't think that I would go. I am really scared of doctors and doctor's offices. Probably because I am afraid of what the doctor might tell me.

It's not that I don't want to go to the doctor, it's that I can't afford to go to the doctor.

I hate going. Unless it's something serious(and I haven't had anything serious yet *knocks on wood*) I will either put it off til the last possible moment or just not do it.

I haven't been since at least 2001. I was sick with what I thought was a cold I think was a very bad flu because I was sick and sneezing and hard time breathing for almost 8 weeks. I really should have gone I might not have been sick so long.

I think it's the way alot of males are raised: That they shouldn't need any help.
I'm quick to go IF I think it's serious enough - because I'm a health expert and know that doctors should be a last resort, and they're expensive.
I take great care of myself and therefore have few medical problems. One time I went, I was mis-diagnosed and given un-nessessary meds. I figured out later that it was just stress that caused unusual symptoms).

It's been a long time since I've had a thorough checkup, and to be honset, I'm a bit afraid to do it. As I get older, I've realized I'm now falling into age brackets where bad things can happen, and I guess I don't want to face that.

Same thing happened to me. I was diagnosed with IBS and given drug after drug for it (and some of these are nasty drugs!), and it turns out it was anxiety. I went on anti-anxiety meds and my GI system got better. Ugh...

Didn't effect me going to the doctor much though. I don't see those doctors anymore anyway.
