Has tipping people gotten out of hand? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I have no problem tipping a waiter or a waitress, because they work really hard at what they do. However, it's these other places that I am starting to have a problem with. For instance, if you go into Dunkin' Donuts, there is a big cup asking for tips. For What?!? Making me a cup of coffee???? There is a cafeteria in my building where I work and at the cash register is a tin with "Tips" written on it. What the hell am I tipping for? Ringing up my order? I am slowly but surely getting fed up with tipping delivery people. All they do is take your food from point A to point B. This delivery woman copped an attitude that she only got a 4 dollar tip for 12 bucks worth of food. As for Door men, they make more than me in tips alone, let alone their base salary for opening and closing doors for a living.

I think tips should be based on how much labor is involved in the job and getting coffee isn't exactly all that labor intense. One place I've ordered from add a driver gratuity with the cost of the dinner, which is sort of pushy.

I think $4 for $12 worth of food is more than enough. In fact I think its only customary for $1 for every $10 spent. You gave her a 25% tip, what does she want? And you probably paid a delivery charge too.

Reminds me of a funny story, actually. Swedes love Americans. Tipping is already included in the bill, but Americans tend to forget and add extra tips when paying. Hehe... I learned that.

Well, extra tipping in Sweden is done for exceptional services, but it's not required. I have received good waitors/waitresses in Sweden, so maybe their customer attitude seems more service-oriented than some waitors/waitresses I've seen around here.

As a part time cab driver, I welcome all tips. I make sure that I tip others as well. Even the cashier that also makes my slice of Pizza. LOL. There are other driver that I work with and some of them don't know the art of tipping although they receive tips from customers here in Orlando. I have taken a few drivers home in my cab and some of them want me to flat rate them instead of running the meter and some have not tipped. I don't get it. They will get angry if they don't receive one from a customer but can't do it themselves. That is just cheap. What you do comes back to you. Other drivers have told me to run the meter and have tipped on top of that. I make sure that I leave a grat. when I am somewhere. Some people work hard. Now, if I get no service, there will be no tip. LOL.

Me too. Grabbing a donut from a basket is hardly waiting on me. Plus those people (I assume) don't make under minimum wage like waitstaff do, so no tips for them.
