SLAYER Spark 9/11 Controversy - May 27, 2006

According to the World Entertainment News Network, SLAYER has sparked controversy with a new song about 9/11 from the terrorists' viewpoint.

The California foursome were fed up with other bands' American perspective of the attacks on New York and Washington D.C. in 2001, so they wrote their own unique version.

Guitarist/songwriter Jeff Hanneman has angered 9/11 victims' families with the extremist angled track "Jihad", which will feature on their new album.

Guitarist Kerry King says, "In America every band under the sun has written their 9/11 song. And that's why I didn't want to have any part of it, but this is really cool. It kind of has an 'Angel of Death' feel because it doesn't condemn anyone or say that anyone's right or wrong."

I admit, I have been guilty of buying into 9/11 conspiracy theories, but when I think of that picture, it just tears me up, all these helpless people with nowhere to run.

One of the things that attracted me to metal was a moral point made in songs by bands such as Black Sabbath, Metallica, and others, but the thing really disappointing about Slayer is that they just want to sensationalize the dark side for morbid lyrics. "Angel of Death" is a song written about one of the most despicable characters of the 20th century, Dr. Josef Mengele, the "Butcher of Auschwitz" who performed horrific, gruesome experiments on his victims for the "benefit" of the Third Reich. He was actually able to elude Nazi hunters for decades when he was found dead after merely drowning in a shallow pool of water on the coast of Brazil. It makes you want to scream, WHERE IS THE JUSTICE?? One of the worst performers of crimes against humanity, and he escapes the gallows poll.

I still to this day shake my head and cannot believe that it happened. God only knows what these people were all feeling that day . How about the ones in the planes that knew they were going to die... unreal

They are headlining The Unholy Alliance Tour this summer with Lamb of God, Mastodon, Children of Bodom, and Thine Eyes Bleed. I'm going to that show in Seattle.
Slayer were one of the bands on the main stage at Ozzfest two years ago.

Lamb of God is one of the most popular newer metal bands, once a metalcore band, but they have become so popular they have been called "the new Metallica", with elements of thrash and death metal injected into some metalcore influences. Their lead singer Randall Blythe who sings in death-metal growl, with the only difference being that you can actually understand the lyrics. Their lyrics deal with a lot of social commentary and politics, especially with themes of over the Iraq War (they are no fans of George Bush). Their concerts are very cool, and their albums, especially Ashes of the Wake, are destined to be classics. Their songs include "Laid To Rest", "Now You've Got Something To Die For", and the title track, along with
"11th Hour". I saw them at Ozzfest two years ago, and went to a Slipknot concert last year just to see them (not Slipknot). They did NOT disappoint.

Mastodon is a band from Georgia that plays killer songs such as "Blood and Thunder", "March of the Fire Ants", and "I Am Ahab". They were on last year's Ozzfest second stage, and they are also intense.

Children of Bodom is a band from Finland named after a series of murders in that country back in the 60's, who have elements of thrash and death metal in a melodic vein. Their lead guitarist, Alexi Laiho, is considered a guitar virtuoso. I'm not sure of the band's songs' names, but from what I've heard on the radio they are great. Their albums include "Hatecrew Death Roll" and "Are You Dead Yet?" Interestingly, due to his severe depression when he was younger, his parents took him out of school and let him just practice on guitar at home. Finnish parents are so cool!!

Thine Eyes Bleed is a band that's supposed to feature the brother of Slayer bassist Tom Araya, but I don't know much more about them.

I feel like I'm going more out of the other bands, I like some of Slayer's songs, but I'm going more out of the general atmosphere and to get some musical ideas in my playing.
