Boomerang Booked to Spend Summer on an Island

with Mike, Lu & Og

Now-Classic Cartoon Network Series Slated for Boomerang Debut on June 5, Monday-Sunday, 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

As summer rapidly approaches, Boomerang has booked a 30-minute, daily island getaway for every viewer at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. (ET) to visit Mike, Lu & Og, an international modern-classic series from Cartoon Network, slated to debut on Monday, June 5. Created, written and directed by Chuck Swenson (creative producer of Rugrats), Mikhail Aldashin and Mikhail Shindel, Mike, Lu & Og follows the adventures of a sophisticated girl from New York named Mike who leaves her home in the big city as an exchange student looking for adventure on the open seas. What she finds is a secluded island populated by some of the quirkiest natives imaginable, including new friends Lu and Og. Mike, Lu & Og follows another “now-classic” series to Boomerang, Dexter’s Laboratory, which joined the Boomerang line-up in January this year.

Mike, Lu & Og originally premiered on Cartoon Network in prime time on Nov. 12, 1999, as part of the network’s initial campaign to claim Friday nights as a viewer destination for original animation. Its production was truly international in scale. Co-creator Aldashin, who held an official Russian government position representing the animation field, created storyboards out of Pilot Studio, Moscow’s premiere independent animation studio. The series’ two other creators, Swenson and Shindel, worked at KINOFILM in Venice, Calif., creating the scripts, approving final storyboards and overseeing business operations. The third production element occurred in Korea, where the show was actually animated. Mike, Lu & Og essentially enjoyed a continuously moving production schedule in three different international time zones.

“There is an unmistakable charm to Mike, Lu & Og, which makes it an ideal addition to Boomerang’s daily schedule for our younger viewers,” said Marc Buhaj, Cartoon Network and Boomerang vice president of programming and scheduling. “The show features an ethereal design reminiscent of watercolor painting that became a signature style of animator Mikhail Aldashin. The entire family will enjoy this series. Its characters and storylines are clever, funny and entertaining, while at the same time the show demonstrates a refined animation style that will appeal to the artistic eye.”

Equal parts cosmopolitan and castaway, Mike chose a little-known island for her exchange program because she was fed up with the hassles of big-city life; but now that she’s there, she sometimes finds herself longing for creature comforts unavailable on her new island home. Even though she misses curbside taxi service and scoffs at the smoke-and-mirrors mysticism of the island soothsayer Queeks, she still enjoys figuring out island life, as long as assimilating doesn’t mean she needs to act as crazy as Lu and Og. Lu is a self-proclaimed princess who’s been spoiled rotten by her doting father Wendel, the island’s governor. An excellent foil to Mike’s more diplomatic, citified nature, Lu prefers to give orders, and taking the brunt of her bossiness is her faithful servant and pet turtle, Lancelot. In contrast to his two loquacious friends, Og is a quiet genius. Although his silence may imply a primitive outlook on the world, Og displays the inventiveness of a world-class savant and takes on an almost Zen-like demeanor when holding philosophical discussions with his talking-animal cohorts, Goat, Pig and Spiney. Together, Mike, Lu and Og manage to find plenty of adventures on the secluded island.
