Default Why does this show take place in the early 80s?

Chris Rock was born in 1965, which means in the early 80s, he was almost 20. If he was around 13 when this show is taking place, shouldn't it be set around 1978 or 79?

It would have been great if it was. It would have been set in my Wonder years.

I'm confused!! This show is about Chris Rock's childhood am I right? So every episode is actually something that really happened when he was young? I know this may sound stupid but I wanted to clear this up..

It may be, but what I am saying is that it should take place in the late 70s rather than the early 80s.

would be awesome to see it happen in the right era since I was born in 1965 and growing up in the 70's is something I wish I could do again...

That would make sense then. Because if the actor is supposed to be 12.. that means that it has to be 1981 I suppose.

I think the only reason it isn't set inthe late 70's is to make it look more like The Wonder Years, which swas set back 20 years from the time it first aired, unless it's just a mistake on the show's part.

I think it's just a mistake. I mean, Chris Rock himself obviously liked that time period, he should have wrote himself to be around in his late teens.

If it was set for him to be in his late teens, then the show's concept would be different. Chris would probably be heading off to college already.

I remember reading in the TV Guide (or some other TV related magazine) that the show is LOOSELY based on Chris Rock's childhood. It is deliberately set in the 80's with Chris Rock's blessing. I think they felt they could tell more stories and make more jokes setting it in the 80's. If is was literally based on Chris Rock's life and set in the 70's the shwo would be vastly different. There wouldn't be any crackhead jokes (there was no crack in the 70's).

What a great explanation-LOL. I frogot about the "loosely" part of it, so that would make a lot of sense then.
