Default What the hell just happened?

I thought they were supposed to answer some of the mysteries of LOST in the finale tonight...

i now have ABSOLUTELY no idea what the heck is going on - did this make some sort of sense to anyone?

Who was those people at the real end of the show that reported back to Desmond's GF? I'm confused.

i think those were the Russians stationed at the South Pole - my guess is that they are looking for their pet Polar Bear, Smashy.

I don't really understand what happened with the hatch either? Their was a nuclear blast it looked like and what happened to Locke and Echo?

the magnetic field apparently made parts of the hatch collapse in on itself and explode... i guess we have to wait to see what happens to Locke & Eko

This is what I got from last night's episode, although I'll probably have to watch it again... (spoilers)

Desmond killed the electromagnetic field, which triggered an alert at the ice station where two guys (one of whom looks like Jack which brings back the whole twin theme touched on vaguely in past episodes) are working for Desmond's girlfriend to try to find the island where her father (who might work for or run Hanso Corp.?) stranded Desmond. Meanwhile, we find out that it was Desmond failing to push the button the first time (when he was busy killing Kelvin who, in a previous flashback, trained Sayid in the art of extracting information from unwilling subjects) that made the electromagnetic field go all squirrely and brought down the plane and landed everyone else on the island. Also, the "others" are really the good guys (I always liked "Henry" or whatever his real name is, so that was gratifying to learn) and since Walt was just a bit too freakish even for them, they let Michael take him off the island and, supposedly, to a location where they will eventually be rescued. We also learned that Desmond got his boat from Libby (who has the same last name as Desmond's girlfriend and her father?) after the death of her husband, Dave (the same name as Hurley's imaginary friend in the asylum). As for the fate of Locke and Eko, tune in next season.

I just have a couple of questions: Why was that giant bird screaming Hurley's name (and was it related to that voice calling for "Elizabeth" - i.e. Libby - just before Sawyer got shot), and what's with the four-toed statue? Other than that, I thought it was a pretty good season finale.

Weird that they are at the North Pole or something...I was so confused when I saw the snow....I was kind of preoccupied packing for a trip, but now that I'm back I will watch again on ABC.com...I am thinking that some more questions were answered or alluded to more subtley than others and I'd like to see if I can pick up something on further viewing.

That whole snow sequence most likely has something to do with that Polar Bear on the island, from all the way back to the beginning of season 1.

Regarding the polar bear, I was a little annoyed when we were initially led to believe that Walt had somehow created it with his mind - remember how a bird he was reading about at home suddenly slammed into the window, and then on the island he was looking at Hurley's comic book which had a polar bear in it - but then we saw polar bears in the training video for the Dharma Initiative when that scientist was talking about the station that was dedicated to zoological experiments. (I assume that also explains why the shark that almost ate Sawyer was branded with the Dharma insignia.) I think there are just some plot points that start out as one thing and then the writers decide to take them in a completely different direction. It keeps the story interesting, but it suggests that even the creators of the show don't really know exactly where it's going.

I agree with the writer's taking all these stories in all sorts of directions, but I do believe there's a master plan for all of this. They did the same thing with Alias over the years. Changing things, then bringing them in whole other directions, then bringing them back. JJ Abrams' crew is a bit strange, but I do trust them.

Yes, I can believe those writers are a strange bunch, and thank goodness for that. The story might be hard to follow at times but I'll take that over mind-numbing predictability any day.

I can see why viewers have gotten irritated with the season finales, both this year's and last, since only a few questions were answered and more were raised. We're used to seeing things tied up in a nice neat package, but that wouldn't work in an episodic series such as this one. It's not a movie, and it's not the kind of series where most episodes can stand alone. If they'd answered every question at the end of last season (what's in the hatch, who are the "others", etc.) there would have been nowhere to go this year. I might get a little frustrated at times with all of the detours and occasional misdirection but, like you, I do trust the writers to eventually get around to answering everything. In fact, I hope that won't happen for at least a few more years.
