Default Why Not Tom?

Why Wasnt Tom welling givin the part of superman in superman returns? I mean they gave it to an unknown, I was shure that welling would get the part since for the last 5 seasons of smallville they were leading up to this point, I am so livid that tom is not superman and now where is smallville going to go.

I think kevin spacey is a great choice for lex luthor and will do the part atleast as good as hackman did it. and of course erica as lois lane, erica is beautiful but not strong enough actress to do the part in a motion picture. so i agree with using someone else for that part but I disagree with not using tom welling. My sister thinks its because tom had other commitments in other movies at the time this was being filmed, I think it may have been because tom was meant for the tv part of clark kent but id like to know for shure.

It is my understanding that they wanted to go with an "unknown" as they did
when they cast the the-then relatively unknown Christopher Reeve in the 1978
"Superman" film. I have no doubts that Tom Welling would have done a credible
job, though. (Perhaps, too, Tom did not want to be typecast as the Man of
Steel.)

omg...if this question is asked one more time i swear. not just here, but everywhere.

Ok if Superman Returns had Tom, they would have to use the cast of Smallville in the movie too. Not only that, but Smallville and Superman Returns are two totally different things. They don't follow the same storylines. Jor-El is an example. The whole show isn't traditional. Lois is in his life too early. And putting Tom in Superman Returns would be like fast forwarding all of Smallville and giving you the ending. Tom is Clark Kent, not Superman. You just can't use the same actor cause it will confuse people. Clark met Lois when he arrived at the Daily Planet in the original Superman movie, in Smallville he met her as a teen. Chloe Sullivan isn't really a Superman character, she was created for Smallville. You get what I'm saying? It's important because Superman Returns is a sequel...it's not a brand new movie. They can't just branch off of Smallville.

I leave you with the newest trailer...could you honestly picture Tom as Superman, I know I couldn't. I don't think I could ever picture him as Superman. To me he will be a confused Clark Kent who doesn't know who he is yet. I love Smallville and I love Tom, but he just isn't Superman. Anyways, it appears that Brandon has done a WONDERFUL job. Instead of complaining, embrace it. I'm just soooo happy there's a Superman movie coming out. I have been waiting years for this to happen.

I have said this many times before on these boards - I wish they let "Smallville" run it's course on TV and then started a new "Superman" franchise on the big screen.
"Smallville" has done an amazing job rethinking the entire Superman origin storyline, and I think it would have been great to see Tom Welling's Clark Kent evolve into Superman.
IMO, the movie execs were just looking to cash in, and rather than wait a few more years for "Smallville" to finish, they jumped the gun to crank out another summer blockbuster.

I have to agree with Barb on this issue. SMALLVILLE and Superman are two
totally different entities, and fans have already waited more than two decades
for another decent Superman motion picture. I think we can enjoy and appreciate each one for what it is.

Did you know that Brandon Routh audditionned to play Clark Kent on Smallville? He almost got the part but, they wanted Tom Welling for years and he finally accepted so,it was bye bye Brandon. But,he was glad to have been turn down because not longer after that he was chosen to play the real deal in the movie screen.I'm sure that he'll do a great job

i still think tom would have been a better choice and although brandon may do a good job i think alot of people expected the part to go to tom welling.

Why would they have to use the same Smallville cast if Tom was chosen to be Superman in the movie?

Well, if you're using an actor who played Clark Kent in the past it would be wise to use the characters that surrounded him before...especially since the show is still on the air. A different Lois? A different Martha? Even Perry has been on Smallville. It would be too confusing for some if you used Tom and no one else from Smallville.

If they used Tom they would basically be continuing Smallville in movie form. Even though I love smallville I'm glad they are keeping the two seperate.
