I just watched this segment and it is so interesting yet very tragic. Its not talked about much on the boards. I thought is was an especially poignant scene when Charles Shelton kissed his wife goodbye for the last time. You can't help but really feel for his wife and her struggle to find out the truth and the tragic way her life ended as well. I just seen this segment this morning on Spike and was surprised it wasn't discussed much. Thanks for the link, CD. Very tragic and sad story.

I completely agree. This is a prime example of how an incident can ruin people's lives. Poor Marion Shelton went through most of her life without her husband, not knowing if he was alive or dead. She committed suicide in 1990 after not being able to take it anymore. I feel so horrible for this family. I only hope that Charles went quick and wasnt tortured.

This segment reaired this week on Lifetime. I'm really surprised this is the only thread we have.

I'm curious what people think: Do you think he was kept alive for decades after he was captured?

I think it seems likely he was alive longer than the government was willing to admit after claiming there were no more living POWs; however, if these stories about Shelton killing his interrogators is true, wouldn't they just shoot him? What reason would they have to keep him alive? That's the part I didn't understand. It's been a long time since I've watched the segment, but I think if that story was true, they would have retaliated with more violence against him.

Marion Shelton's struggle and ultimate suicide makes this segment one of the saddest, in my opinion. Especially when they play her speech about Charles being her childhood sweetheart while showing mourners placing flowers on her coffin. It's heartbreaking that she and her family never received answers.

Highly underrated case, IMO. Presented a fairly compelling argument that he survived longer than the US government led on, but I tend to think he died shortly after being captured. The tragic part of the case was that due to the fact that the government didn't classify him as KIA until 1994, making his wife's untimely death all the more sad. Typically on cases shown on UM, the military would classify people who were most likely dead (Curt Borton) as MIA, but for some reason they classified Shelton as a POW.
