Sad Hair-pulling habits help.....

I have this awful headhair-pulling habit that I can't get rid of! It's one of my nervous ticks, and I am coming to the point where I am seriously thinning out my hair around my hairline. In other words - I do NOT wanna end up bald!!!! I'm seriously scared....

I bought a couple of hair bands/head bands to try and prevent my hands from doing this hair pulling. Even putting my hair up on a high ponytail is proving not so helpful because I have given myself some flyaways. I hold them back with bobby pins, but it's still not so helpful.

Even telling myself to STOP isn't working because when I get nervous or bored, I tend to pull my hair. I hate this!! It scares me, but it doesn't seem enough to stop this nervous tick.

Any ideas? I don't wanna end up bald. That'll...be VERY hard on me especially in our society.

My nephew did that as a child and teen. In his case, it was a nervous condition.

Stress can take a toll on a person in many ways.

If you absolutely cannot stop pulling your hair out, it might be a good idea to see your doctor.

Is this condition also called Trichotillomania (sp?) ?

Yes, it's something along those lines. It's like a habitual and uncontrollable hair-pulling habit or something.

Thanks, Janice! If I can't find any available remedies, then I will have to seek professional help before it is too late. I worry about my head hair appearance in our society.

I'm sorry, Mona. I understand your fear of losing your hair. For the past year my hairline has been thinning and I am a bit scared that I am going to go bald. I don't like bald. The only people who look good bald are Sean Connery and Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart).

Well, maybe medical help would be a good idea, in the meantime, you can try doing what i used to do when i needed something to occupy my hands, buy a deck of cards, and shuffle them over and over till they fall apart ...it may seem dumb, but, it works

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. It seems to follow some sort of a pattern that I find myself having to follow, unfortunately. Seeing the pictures of these patients with the similar situation is freaking me out, but it's obviously not slowing me down. Grrrr to me.

Mike, I'm sorry to hear about your concern on baldness as well. It's never easy.

Also, thank you, musicrocksmyworld, Jenny, and Mikado.

Mikado, that's a GREAT idea about shuffling the cards until they fall apart. It doesn't sound silly. Heck, I'll take ANYTHING to distract my hands. That's for sure. It might take some time (months) to allow the newer hairs to grow out. But I will give that a try. Thanks!

Yeah, I think I ruined 3 decks of cards before I was able to control my nervous energy problem, but, better than pulling out hair, right? Good luck with that
