Default Anyone seen the original Exorcist movie?

I just recently read the book, but I've been too chicken so far to watch the movie. If you have seen it, what's it like? Is it worth seeing? How scary are we talking here?

Yeah, it's pretty creepy. I know some people don't think so just because society has been so desensitized towards horror movies in recent years and the blood, gore and violence just becomes more prevalent. However, if you look past that, this is one SCARY movie.

I suggest seeing the version from a few years ago, the re-released one. It's the same movie, but has one VERY horrifying scene re-added that didn't make the original release, and also has a few subtle additions here and there.

It's definitely worth viewing... it tops my list of scariest movies of all time, and is certainly one of the best movies ever made. Not for the squeamish or faint of heart, but worth watching!

OH MY GOD, I saw that re-released version when it hit the theaters a few years ago and I nearly screamed. I was so creeped out by that scene...I had nightmares for weeks Honestly, the original (without the added scene, I mean), just creeps me out but isn't too nightmare inducing. If you really wanna get scared, Lauren, watch the version Matt is talking about

I completely agree! Both versions are frightening....I watched the original version when I was way too young (like 9 or 10)...and I watched it several times after that....but even after having seen it probably 10 times, seeing the re-release still scared the garbage out of me!

I've watched several video clips from this movie on Youtube.com, including the crucifix scene, and they weren't too bad, maybe I can watch the full movie, What do you guys think?

The crucifix scene was one of the scariest parts of the movie (IMO) so I think you can handle watching the whole movie.

If you were able to handle that scene and a few others, then you'll probably be able to see the whole movie. I read the book a few years ago and it got to me.. had to throw it away. This was after I'd already watched the movie, which I wasn't able to see in its entirety until I was in my early 20s. That's because when I was in elementary school I woke up one night, went into the living room and saw Regan's head turning all the way around and she growled.

Anyhow, some people can watch this and not have one problem while others are really freaked out by the whole thing. I still think it's one of the most frightening and disturbing films ever made. And worth seeing.

It's pretty terrifying. I suggest you give it a try. It's also a very interesting story.

Default hmm

I think any movie, is going to be based on only personal capabilities.
Some can watch blood and gore, others not be bothered.

I will say with the exorcist - one of the reasons it IS so terrifying is the religious background to it, and the involvement of the supernatural portrayed.

As someone watches a slasher movie, Freddy Jason, Mike Meyers you can say oh that would never happen
Where as the topic portayed in this, espeically religiously is going to be percieved different per person, as well as possibly offending your own thoughts or perceptions.

If you have any doubt, researching the movie is a good idea, so is watching it with someone else.
But if you do decide to watch it, and you feel uneasy, unconfortable- you can turn it off.
Never make yourself watch something.

The fact is there are a few areas of subliminal images used- so you might feel bothered and not even know why.
Go with your instincts.

I think its a good movie for a lot of reasons, but I think due to the nature of what it involves- it can be more unsettle for some than others.

Thanks for the help you guys, any suggestions for where to research it more? I've already been to IMDB.com and it was very interesting.

Default Your mother sucks socks that smell!

I believe that was the line from when SNL spoofed it with Richard Pryor all those years ago.

My father took my mother, brother, myself and our female neighbor when it first came to town in 1974. My brother and I had a good laugh about it (during the movie) that it p.o.'d our father. We had pepperoni pizza afterwards, so no trouble watching this film.

My neighbor claimed that her bed shook like Reagan's bed that night when she went to sleep. I never believed that bit of bull!

I always enjoyed the technical aspects of the film: cinematography, sound, score, locations... love the scene of Father Merrin bathed in a shaft of light when he exits the cab at Chris McNeal's home.

Yes, this movie is in my DVD film collection.
