Default Question about Florida going to Arizona

I was able to catch quite a bit of the marathon this past weekend on TV Land. Now in one of the episodes, Michael (I think) states something like he didn't want to go to Arizona because "Mom and Carl" are there and they need to spend time with one another. or something to that effect.

Now, I know that Ester Rolle left Good Times for a while. Was it a season? Anyway, in the storyline do they say that Florida moved to Arizona and got married to Carl??????? I never remembered that aspect of Florida leaving. And if that is the case, how did they explain Florida moving back to Chicago but leaving her new husband Carl in Arizona?!?!?!?

Signed,
Respectfully,
Dutch

Yes it was explained at the start of the 5th season that the Florida character moved to Arizona and married Carl. The 5th season is the season that Florida was absent from the show. But it was never explained why Carl wasn;t with her when she moved back to Chicago.

Wasn't the reason that he died from his lung cancer? I thought they mentioned it in one episode of the sixth season.

As far as I know, they never mentioned Carl again after Florida got back, except in her first episode back for Thelma's wedding. She had a book for, I think Michael, and she said her and Carl bought it for him. Then he was never mentioned again that I know of, someone else might have heard him mentioned, but I didn't that I can remember.

Ironically, Moses Gunn, the actor who played Carl died of lung cancer in real life. I think he died in the early 1990's if I remember correctly.

They married Florida and Carl during the season finale of season four. They also created a way of allowing Florida to disappear while they work out the problems with Rolle.

I don't think they married her off so they could work out the problems. I think Solomon stated that when the ratings were not that good, they felt they needed to bring the Flo character back and so had to think of a way to do so as well as mend whatever issues had not been dealt with.

They were supposed to get married at the beginning of season . There was no wedding at the end f season 4, just a proposal.

What Esther did open her mouth about was the fact that the writers and directors put her in a relationship too soon after James' death. She was against Florida going into a relationship so soon. Good Times sure had the potential of going down as a classic but the J.J. antics went too far to a point it became cartoonish and unhappy actors with the direction of the show.

Yeah that was one of the wierd moments in the show's run. Another inconsistency was that Florida was complaining when James wanted to go to Alaska for that job saying he can't leave his wife and children but then she marries Carl and leaves her three children behind.

No matter what, the character did choose to be with the atheist, and that is NOT CONSISTENT with the character that we have come to known. I would have argued, if you writers are going to marry me off so soon, then at least let it be a man that Flo would be with...don't throw in a character who is atheist just so you can make a storyline around that.

As for Michael changing his tune in that episode, that was too unbelievable. As quickly as he changed his mind to not believe, he changed his mind to believe in God again. Stupid.
