I don't know how it affects those who have seen it numerous times. Seeing it for the first time really wiped me out.

I know I WAS!!!!!! Especially since the only other character to be "killed off" at that time was in M*A*S*H. James has the status of being the second character in tv history of being killed off. Not something expected and surely not something deserved.
