Default Dear Abby

This letter is in Dear Abby today. I found it interesting and sad.
----------------------------------------------------------

DEAR ABBY: Our 24-year-old son was killed recently in an auto accident. We had long dreaded that his life might end like this. He had a history of many traffic tickets and a terrible driving record. He had totaled three vehicles in the last three years. The wreck that killed him was his fourth accident in three years.

We have discovered that our son's grandmother took out a large life insurance policy on him after the first accident. Thinking that his own grandmother would "bet" on his death has made our grief even harder to bear. At first, when we confronted her, she said she had taken out the policy to ensure his proper burial because we have no money. (My wife was diagnosed with cancer 3 1/2 years ago, and the treatment left us destitute.)

The policy is many times the cost of our son's funeral. When the funeral director asked my wife and me in the presence of other relatives (including his grandmother), if there was a life insurance policy to defray the expenses, I turned and looked at her. She didn't utter a word! We borrowed the money from my wife's brother.

We don't want a penny of this "blood money" for ourselves or our son's burial. But now our son's grandmother is acting very hostile to us. We feel she saw our son's bad driving record and thought she had a chance to profit from his death. Are we wrong? -- BROKENHEARTED PARENTS IN TEXAS

DEAR BROKENHEARTED: You have my sympathy not only for the loss of your son, but also the loss of your illusions about his grandmother. People who feel guilty often act hostile. Unless there is something you failed to mention in your letter, it appears you have assessed the grandmother's motives correctly.

Wow. I don't even know what to say. I don't see how anyone's grandmother could do a thing like that. It's like she was counting on her own grandson to get killed just so she could cash in. And to not even help pay for the funeral is appauling. Something tells me there is a lot more going on with that family than what was written in the letter. They've probably had a long history of bickering. Very sad
I hate to say this but what that grandmother did sounds alot like something my older brother would do.

I think that story is revolting. Who the **** is the grandmother to do something like that? She is basically placing a bet that her her grandson would die in an accident. My one question is, how is it possible for a grandparent who is not a primary guardian, able to take out life insurance on someone else?

I always thought that anyone could take a life insurance policy out on anyone, but I really don't know.

I don't know if I could even talk to this woman again. If she did pay for the funeral, it would be different because her story about wanting a proper burial for her grandson would be true. But that wasn't the case at all.

My mother had an elderly penniless uncle. He had no children. She had a small policy on him (I think 10 grand), so nobody would have to worry about his funeral costs. Her motives were good and pure, and she gave him a nice funeral when he died.

The truth is that this poor kid did run an unusually high risk of losing his life in a car accident. It's as if grandma played the lottery, with her grandson's death providing the grand prize. It is disgusting.

It is absolutely disgusting. There has got to be a way for the parents to get that money away from the grandmother,

It is possible for non parents/guardians to take life insurance policies on grandchildren/ nieces/nephews whatever. My mom took one out on my nephew when he was little. Not sure if she still has it though. As long as you pay the premiums you can take insurance policies on just about anybody in the family as long as you know their SS #.

I think that is horrible. Hey Janice, do you mind if you give me your social? I was thinking about putting out insurance on your life.

That grandmother should be ashamed.
