Carroll O'Conner - Contract renegotiations - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

During a contract hold out, Carroll O'Connor missed the taping of four episodes of "All In the Family." Three episodes were filmed about Archie failing to return from a convention (Season Five). The producers gave O'Connor an ultimatum, that the story arc could conclude with Edith finding out that Archie had been murdered [episode #93: "Where's Archie?"].

What kind of show would this have been, without an Archie Bunker?! That's like The Sopranos without James Gandolfini; that's like Dallas without Larry Hagman. Gandolfini and Hagman both renegotiated their contracts when they found they were the life-blood of their respective series, and both won out for higher salaries. Carroll O'Conner was obviously the life-blood of "All In The Family," and felt he deserved a bigger salary, which is why he held out. Poor guy, he had to buckle or else they would have killed his character off.

(This is totally off-topic, but Carroll O'Conner auditioned for the role of The Skipper on Gilligan's Island.)

Larry Hagman did have the same problem on Dallas. The summer he held out their was talk about Robert Culp replacing him as JR. Some actors can't be replaced. If Archie would have left, their wouldn't have been any All In The Family.

Yuck.

Everyone on AITF was funny because of their interactions with Archie. I think Mike would have been affected most of all. He wasn't very funny on his own, only when him and Archie would fight. He got along great with Edith so I don't know where the conflict would have came from?

Its not off-topic if you think of it this way... Did they consider the converse? Alan Hale Jr. to replace Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker?

...were good friends AND neighbors (Larry's daughter Heidi appeared as a regular on "ARCHIE BUNKER'S PLACE" in the 1980-'81 season), so I can imagine Carroll giving tips to Larry about "holding out" for the right price when "negotiation time" came around. It worked for O'Connor--he eventually wound up 'running' "ALL IN THE FAMILY" and spinning it off into "ARCHIE BUNKER'S PLACE"...just as much as Hagman 'supervised' "DALLAS" in its later years.

Yea and I heard rumors that Robert Culp was contacted to perhaps take Larry Hagman's place on Dallas. I like it how these producers would ever think the audience would accept this.

I think it was going to be; when J.R. came out of the hospital after he recovered from his gunshot; suddenly he'd look like Robert Culp. They did that later with Miss Ellie; when Barbera Bel Geddes (who played her) suffered a stroke and decided to leave the show, they replaced her with Donna Reed and didn't offer any explanation as to why the character suddenly looked different.

Like what Screen Gems did when they replaced Dick York with Dick Seargent on "Bewitched".
