Default I think Shirley should have stayed at the Balloon Company

regardless of she was hired for being black or not. She could have learned a lot by watching the other girl, and picked up some phone communication skills from Liz, and used that exprience and the skills she got from that job and appplied for another secretary job. Then after a while she could have developed a friendship wit the other workers and who's knows. But I feel should she have used that job as a stepping stone and eventaully aplplied to skills somewhere else. It would have been much better than going back to rob's place and being a waitress. We all know that Shirley wasn't QUALIFIED to work in a office but she could have LEARNED if she had stayed with the company. She basically was going to be paid to learn and observe, and not only that, she could have came up with some other ways to help out around the office. I think shirley gave up too easily.

I agree, Rob's was such a dead end job. Shirley should have swallowed her pride and kept her job.

Exactly, she was supposed to show them that she is office material and not just someone to sit and do nothing. And it appeared she never worked on her typing skills because she never left Rob;s place again-lol

It was almost as if She didn't want to advance herself.

And she could have been a little more NICER to Liz since she was meeting her for the first time and not all ghetto. And more importanly she should have CUT that hair down since she was going on a interview

I don't know if big afros were more acceptable in the business world in the 70's, so I can't comment.

Big Afro's are not acceptable at all in the business world-lol Shirley didn't show any class at all and was looking like Tito's Jackson Sister, Shirley Jackson-lol

This episode was well written and produced but after reading over this thread I think Mabel would have been better in this role rather than Shirley. Mabel probably would have stayed at the job and should them how black people can do anything. Given that humor was probably the intended purpose of the episode, I can see why Shirley was chosen instead.

Mabel would have defintely made a better impression on the workers.

They could have used that to give Mabel the better job she wanted for her character.

Yeah, i always wondered about this too. Maybe Shirley realized that office work wasnt for her and she liked being a waitress better who knows..
I have heard people say that many people have a love/hate relationship with service jobs like that.. She did become a part owner of the restaurant in whats happening now, right?
This could be a case of different strokes for different folks... I know this one guy who is very smart, has a high iq and is a college graduate, but the job he enjoyed most was as a manager at a fast food place, go figure, i would think he would hate something like that...

I think Shirley may have been too busy helping Rog,Dwayne and Rerun make bootleg Doobie Brothers records!
