In my opinion, Esther Rolle destroyed Good Times - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

No disrespect to Rolle fans, but look at the facts...Rolle left the show high and dry and basically had the kids living on their own in the ghetto which was ridiculous for a mother to do and then when she came back, she demanded that the JJ character be toned down and viewers HATED a mature JJ. What do you think?

Yeah it may some truth that since there was never a sitcom that had success WITH NO PARENTS-lol

Single Parent shows I think suffered a little, but having three kids living alone in the ghetto was probably more than what the audience could handle.

The show without Esther Rolle is unwatchable for me. I mean, just a complete mess.

Although, ultimately I think it was John Amos who did the show in when he left. I can't even watch it without him.

Does anyone have a breakdown of the ratings from season to season, to gauge the impact that Rolle and Amos' departures had on the show?

It's just incredible to me how that show fell apart at the seams and went down the tubes. Those first few seasons were excellent.

The ratings for season 4-first season without Amos was-#26

THe ratings for season 5-without Amos and Rolle was below #30

The Ratings for season 6 was below #30

So they had a hit show until Amos left. What a shame. They blew a good thing. I can't help but imagine how things would have been different if Amos and Rolle hadn't left.

Yep, I get depressed when they are done showing season 3 and think, if only......LOL
And, I agree that JJ did change too much in the later seasons. I know people naturally mature, but I think it was still too much.

Yeah the producers thought J.J was the star but didn't realize it was the James Evans character

JJwas definitely a star, but James and Florida were the backbone.
