AVG Free Edition

I just downloaded this program and ran a scan of my system. It tells me that there's a virus on it but when I try to get rid of it , nothing will happen. I can't quarantine it, delete it or zap it. I recall this program being a little different than before. My computer is not acting up or anything. It's just the program that concerns me.

AVG is mainly a spyware program. For deleting viruses I use microsoft's antispyware (it's free) which you can download from www.microsoft.com I have both programs running all of the time. The updated version is called Microsoft WindowsDefender.

Clear as mud. I downloaded the Windows Defender recently . Gonna try that one .

its the other way around - AVG is an antivirus for removing viruses and such, while Windows Antispyware and its replacement Windows Defender are both for removing spyware ONLY.

where is the virus that AVG is finding located? is it in a quarantined or vault location? - usually an antivirus program will "lock" any viruses it finds in a secure location so that it can't do any damage and then it will delete it.

you should try to reboot into safemode and run AVG again, then try to remove the virus-infected file, and if AVG wont do it automatically, take note of the file's location and try to delete it manually while in safemode.

Apparently the virus is on something related to the Java program. It just tells me that a virus was found but no other options are available. I ran the Windows Defender and found nothing.

Oh my gosh! I got confused! You are absolutely right! AVG catches viruses in my email. And Antispyware is just that! Sorry for the confusion! But both work great! Having both running has really protected my computer!

delete your internet cache, temporary files and most importantly your java temporary files...

open the Java control applet in the Control Panel, if it is the Sun version of Java there should be a button near the bottom of the "General" tab marked "Delete Files". click on that, then click on OK

you may even want to download CCleaner to clear out all of that stuff at once

That's strange; the Java icon is not on the control panel and the program on the main list is J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0. I downloaded the 'cleaner' and see what it finds. The Windows Defender didn't find a thing.

You may need to switch to "Classic view" in the Control Panel - if you open up the J2SE Runtime Environment, do you see a Temporary files section?

I found the Java under the classic view; the J2SE only appears on the Programs list and the only thing I can do with it is edit or remove it. Should I run the AVG again? Looks like the files were not numerous; it didn't take long to delete them.

were you able to delete the temp Java files? - if so then yep, run AVG again to see if that stuff is gone

Yes I did.
It's been scanning for over 15 minutes and nothing's been found yet.
I always seem to work on this issues at around the same time I have to be in bed.
