Default Does anybody else hate family parties?

Call me a homebody or whatever, but I hate going to family parties. I don't know what it is, but I just don't like them at all. For me, there is nothing worse than going to a party for a cousin or other relative you hardly speak to. In the next few weekends, I have about 3 or 4 communions to attend. I am dreading them. First off, I hardly ever deal with these family members on a regular basis. Secondly, I feel these communion parties are more for the parents than for the kids. I mean, they never go to Church throughout the whole year and only go so that they can have a Communion party. That drives me nuts. Lastly, one of these parties is all the way down in Pennslyvania. So basically, my whole weekend is going to be spent down there. I work hard during the week and hate to waste a whole weekend for a stupid party.

I'm not too fond of them either. My relatives on my father's side always get these gatherings on certain holidays, and they make it seem like it's mandatory that you attend. Like yourself, I only see them a few times out of the year, and when I do, it's accidentally.

I don't like them. I used to LOVE them when I was little, but now they just suck. I'm annoyed greatly by a lot of my relatives.

There is an Easter potluck tomorrow with a bunch of relatives. I'm not going.

Sometimes, mostly my aunt on my dad's side will have a Christmas party. Doesn't really bother me though, because I know most of them well enough were it doesn't seem ackward. Now there was a family reunion my dad made me go to, with family he barely speaks to and that I had never met. That was uncomfortable.

I agree. I hate trying to make small talk with someone I see once or twice a year.

I don't mind them as long as I don't have to drive. I've come to hate driving even if it's just a short distance. I like to see cousins and other relatives

I can take or leave family parties. It depends which relatives. Most of my maternal aunts' (two of them I consider estrange because of how they have acted liked jerks towards my mom) parties love to get beer and just drink a lot as it gets later in the night. I only like to visit at the beginning of the party, and that's it.

My mom's brother's wife's family I like to attend their parties. They are nice, don't gossip, they're friendly, and they aren't big drinkers like my maternal aunts' families.

So it always depends on which relatives....

I don't mind them I think it's because I'm really close to my family on both sides. What I dread is going to my husbands family get togethers, Even though I know a lot of them, I still dread going.

I love going to them but it won't be the same. Over the course of a little over half a year two of my great-aunts died and my grandfather was killed in a car crash in October. One of them died in August and I always looked forward to seeing her whenever my parents took me up to see my father's parents. My other one died in February and I didn't see her a lot until my grandmother's 90th birthday a year ago. She was cool.

It's been really hard on my grandmother but she's making it. Her two remaining sisters (she had a third that died in the 1990s) and her husband of 62 or some years died in a span of a little over a year.

I did get to see my father's cousins and my second cousins - some of whom I had never met before - during the funerals but I feel that it was not a good way to get together.

With my mom's side, it's a little difficult now...We've had a lot more problems over the last two years or so. I guess it started when one of my younger cousins committed suicide some 1 1/2 years ago. Some of the relatives aren't on good terms at the moment, plus more than half of us grandchildren [me being one of them] are in our 20s now and a lot of us have moved away or whatever. It's hard to get together...We used to be able to get together more often when we were kids.

With my dad's side, I actually don't mind at all. I ADORE my dad's side. Everybody is so goofy and they just rock really hard. Unfortunately, we're scattered over the US so it's even harder to get together. The last time -EVERYBODY- on my dad's side got together was for a family reunion in the summer of 2001. Time before that was in August of 1991.

So I guess what I'm saying is, I'm not too wild about going to parties on my mom's side, but I love the ones on my dad's side.

same here. the only family parties i love are the ones my sister has...then relatives have to come HERE.

If I was invited to communion parties Brian, I would send a gift card or something rather than go. I am bothered too by people who don't attend church, don't think of God or Jesus, or whoever they are supposed to worship...but only think of his "home" (church) when their kids are supposed to get baptized, etc. Being they are far away too, would give me reason enough not to go. I would just send something.

I don't talk with most of my family. I get invited to a lot of parties that are for close friends. They are more like family to us.

Driving hundreds of miles to a party is not my idea of a good time. Irene, you are right, these people in Pennslyvania should understand that it is too far away for some people. I think I am going to take your advice and just send something.

I would also like to add, I do not mind going over my parents house, brother's house or my in laws place. I don't mind small gatherings with members of my immediate family. It is when we get to the extended family that bothers me.
