Default FREE VIDEO DOWNLOADs to TVtapeTrading?? Ethical or NOT ETHICAL???

Hello: Please give me your opinion about the feasibility of downloading and adding to your TRADELIST using any of these online sources to burn to DVD... The reason I ask if that before I even completed a TRADE, not from this FORUM, but another FORUM some guy set up a trade and he seemed like a really nervous-type, and then quite naturally he got cold feet and said in a rude accusatory tone that he thinks I had gathered a certain TV show from ONLINE DOWNLOADS..and that's just plain FALSE,, vbecause I don't even know how to go about successfully completing such a procedure, I mean with any kind of desirable result,,, NOT A CLUE, did I have as to what he was talking about, but I think it is safe to assume he must have gotten burned in the past, Personally I have never done such a thing (I am not saying this type of thing is right or wrong), but it occured to me that perhaps, inasmuch as it can in fact be done, is it a GOOD THING that we should WELCOMe, or a BAD THING that we should FEAR like the guy in this senario, I would like your expert (or ???) Opinion I need to know beacuse the FUTURE holds out this type of Video Compliation as a INCREASINGLY more COMMON type of DVD video file, PLEASE help me with the ETHICAL ISSUES that surrround this VERY NEW TECHNOLOGY... Thank YOu...Donald Miller Charleston South Carolina

Most of the shows that are available for downloading (at least the ones I've paid attention to) are newly aired within the past few years. IE, big hits are Veronica Mars, NCIS and alot of music. I've not seen much (any?) that would be considered "vintage", such as Make Room for Daddy or Outer Limits. Personally, I don't see any difference between downloading & trading. The one "ethical" issue that does have some validity is that downloading may prevent some people from paying for certain channels. IE, Veronica Mars shown on cable channel UPN. But again, this is no different that trading for these shows. However, when you're talking about last night's NCIS that was shown on CBS, I don't know why it would be a problem, at all, since it won't be available for purchase for a while, anyway. (I kind of doubt anyone goes out to buy the retail sets a year or more later because they missed an episode on March 23, 2003...)

Another consideration is that sometimes you can download entire seasons. So yes, if you download season one of CSI, you're not going to buy the retail set. But again, no different than trading.

I'm thinking "they" (whoever "they" are) are stressing this (there are warnings on some commercial DVDs we've rented in the past year or two) is maybe because it may be more 'visible' than trading since it's popular with the younger, "gotta have the latest technology", Ipod/Razor carrying, set.

I guess another consideration could be availability. When a show is available for download, anyone, anywhere, with an internet connection & the right software can download it. Trading, OTOH, is limited to two people who have shows the other one wants and negotiating a trade. So the field is a bit more limited, when trading.

Default Downloading

The type of files you are talking about are called, uusally "torrenting"

And in most areas this is illegal. Aside from few sources of open and legal files, the majority are from paid cable accounts, paid for dvd sets, paid for programs= you get the idea.

Torrents are files those whom have on their hard drive share in a peer to peer format.

Now if you captured in a copy of lets' say Eight is enough, airing from public tv and share it- this might not be a big deal.

But torrenters are sharing dvd files, the avi files off movies- and more importantly, and more illegal- Movie Theater Releases.
Which are called Bootlegs.

Torrent Sites are being shut down more and more-
Fines are higher and higher.
Wether it be software, cartoons, or mvoies the simple fact is it is taking money from someones hands.

Each file sent, and downloaded is another file, another show, another cd, or another movie ticket that won't be bought.

I could fill this forum with those headlines of whom has been arrested, shut down - companies disbanned and so forth.
So traders are smart to want nothing to do with this.

And for those who think your cable company might not know what your doing. Think again.
Your cable company can tell exactly how much borad band traffic you are using, and yes, for those afraid of Orson Wells years, they CAN see what sites and spaces you have gone.
Should they want to they can get a subpeona for that site, to see what you downloaded.
And they are doing it more and more and more.

A chicagoland lady was just fined 150,000.00 For motion picture files on her hardrive.
She was trying to get all of Star Trek's episodes, and in and out 4 movies were also in the downloads.
She was fined 50,000. PER movie.
And this is of course without the risks of adult materials, and or items mislabeled that can get you actual jailtime.

In example this morning
No more illegal movies on BitTorrent. BitTorren's creator, Bram Cohen has struck a deal with the Motion Picture Association of America to jointly battle movie piracy. (Source: News.com)
Hollywood studios announced an agreement with Bram Cohen, the creator of the popular BitTorrent file-swapping technology, that will keep him from helping users find pirated copies of movies online.

Cohen had launched a service on his Web site last May that searched the Internet for file downloads that use his BitTorrent technology. While many of these are legal files, such as open-source software packages, inevitably the search engine also found feature films.

In an event held at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, Cohen and executives from the Motion Picture Association of America said they were united in thwarting piracy.

"BitTorrent Inc. discourages the use of its technology for distributing films without a license to do so," Cohen said in a statement. "As such, we are pleased to work with the film industry to remove unauthorized content from BitTorrent.com's search engine."

So as always I state, be careful when trading. Ask questions. Know your traders , Know your risks
