Default From a historic point, this statement by Flo was TOTALLY STUPID...

When Michael told Flo "he wasn't our president, he was THEIR president" and Flo then responds "They were all our presidents...why do you think there are so many blacks named after presidents?"

WELL!!!!!! because the blacks that were kidnapped and brought here were GIVEN THE NAMES OF THEIR OWNERS...she made that statement as if it's something to be proud of...to have the name of an American president. I have no idea why that statement was interjected into the story. That is sooo crazy.

And also, when Flo said "where do you go off calling the FATHER OF OUR COUNTRY a racist?" I mean, we all know that he is called that. I can see if she said "Where do you go off calling George Washington a racist?" Just the fact that the phrase FATHER OF OUR COUNTRY was also interjected didn't seem like something someone would say. It sounded like a history lesson rather than a conversation between a mother and young son.

Micahel was ******** in this ep which is why I have it as one of my least favorite eps of season 1. The scene when Thelma says she will give him her autograph picture of Bill D williams, and then stupid ass michael says-"did he lead any protest marches? and Thelma said-"No, and then Michael says-"NOT INTERESTED. I hate watching this ep

I did like James in this episode, though. Of course, he could liven up any episode-lol

That's the thing Irene, 9 out of 10 times, discussions were nothing but sermons to the audience. Stats, stats and more stats!

which is what Norman Lear shows were all abt. But those statements abt blacks being named after presidents were just ludicrous. Really now...what were the writers thinking? smoking?

Michael's response should've been simply, 'Slaves.'

I think slavery was an awful thing and I am not a racist. However, Florida may have known more than you realize. George Washington stipulated that upon his death, all the slaves he own woudl be freed.

Thomas Jefferson suggested a clause in the constitution that would end slavery, but it was not supported. He even had slave mistress.

Many blacks were offered an opportunity to return to Africa via a newly formed nation called Liberia. Few accepted. Even one of Liberia's leaders in recent years had the last name Monroe. This shows that blacks desired to stay in this country, hence, the presidents became their presidents too. They chose to live here and live by the laws of the land, making it their land too and it's history part of theirs.

I never said it wasn't their history. I was only referring to the part that Florida said which made it sound like it was proudful to have a presidents name. My opinion, if that were me in a black person's shoes, I wouldn't be proud of the fact that I was FORCED to have a name instead of the name I should have been born with, or my family ancestors were born with.

That was funny...but not to remind us of when I posted way back when, YES THERE ARE!!! Norm Nixon the NBA player, and alot of other Nixon's as well before that. Not a president I would want to be named after.
