MARTINSVILLE, Ind. -- A grand jury indicted an Ellettsville man in the killing of Jill Berhman, the Indiana University student who vanished in 2000 during a bicycle ride, officials said today.

Myers II, 30, Ellettsville, in the murder of Jill Behrman. - Gary Moore / The Star Police arrested John R. Myers II, 30, over the weekend, officials said a news conference. Behrman, a 19-year-old Indiana University student, disappeared after she left Bloomington during a solo bicycle ride May 31, 2000. The search drew national attention, but it turned into a murder investigation after her skeletal remains were found March 9, 2003, in a Morgan County field. Myers was indicted on a single count of murder by a grand jury that met for four weeks in Martinsville and finished its work last week. Investigators said they will need the public’s help as they look into Myers’ background. "John Myers is new to the public with regard to this investigation," said Indiana State Police Detective Rick Lang. Eric Behrman said the arrest in his daughter's death gives a measure of peace to him and his wife, Marilyn. "This has been an imporatant day for all of us," Behrman said. "This is what we wanted to see." Marilyn Behrman told reporters she clearly remembers saying goodbye to her daughter before the bike ride. "As this case makes its way through the criminal justice system I would like everyone to remember that this is actually about a girl named Jill who went for a bike ride and never came home," Marilyn Behrman said. The grand jury also indicted Alisha T. Evans, 26, of the Bloomington area, on two counts of perjury. She’s related to Myers through marriage. Lang said officials are still looking for an anonymous caller who reported seeing a red car. “This investigation is not over,” he said. The grand jury was the latest effort by investigators to solve the case, which received widespread media attention and was profiled on the television show “America’s Most Wanted.” Police have tracked numerous leads, including a theory that a drunken or drugged motorist struck Behrman. Authorities drained Salt Creek on the north shore of Lake Monroe in late 2002 after a promising tip led them to believe her body might have been dumped in the water. The discovery of Behrman’s body in the woods near Paragon redirected the case. In December 2004, police in Mexico captured a Lawrence County fugitive who authorities said shared a jail cell with an Ellettsville man who was suspected in the Behrman case but was never charged. Last summer, police announced they were studying DNA samples from two Monroe County men in their late 20s. Officials said last month that the grand jury investigation would involve the two men but would not comment on their connection to the case. **This article appears in today's edition of The Indianapolis Star. |

Great find rerungirl!
I hadn't heard his name mentioned before in this case. Any idea how long he was a suspect? I'm still curious as to the dna, like if Behrman was raped. Considering how long she was out there before she was found you would think that would be the only way they would have found any. Unless of course there was some physical evidence on her bike. Let us know if you come across any more info as this eventually goes to trial.
