Default Sally was the best Writer

Well I have been home sick with the flu for the past few days. the only bright spot is that I have had some time to catch up on my DVD viewing,
I come to this conclusion: Sally Rogers was the best writer of the three.

1) When Buddy left in ep 14 " Buddy can you spare a job" Sally & Rob had no trouble writing this weeks script, In fact it was too easy they said,
2) When Rob was home sick( I can relate) Buddy & sally were so far ahead that they started working on next weeks script.
3) Buddy & Rob had all sorts of trouble when Sally left in "the pen is mightier than the mouth". They couldnt even get the typewriter to work. Rob seems to have forgotten how to type but that's another topic.

My conclusion: Sally was the writer that held everything together.

Although my opinion may be a little biased (for lack of a better word) because of the fact that Sally is my favorite character, I would have to agree with you. Although Rob and Buddy were very talented writers as well, Sally seemed to be the one with the most skills. Even Rob admitted in the episode, "Talk to a Snail", that Buddy was good with the jokes but Sally was good with the visual comedy and she knew how to type with all her fingers. I guess Rob or Buddy could work well with just Sally alone because her skills complimented theirs so well, if that makes sense.

Oliver: I'd take a seed, a tiny little seed, I'd plant it in the ground, I'd put some dirt on it, I'd water it, and pretty soon, do you know what I would have?
Lisa: A dirty little wet seed.

I agree. While Buddy was good at the jokes and Rob was good with the physical comedy, Sally could come up with good content and type it all out. I guess that's why with all three of them together, they came up with some pretty good routines. They were all good at what they did, but Sally was the glue that held them together. I think your conclusions are definitely correct.

Default What you probably weren't aware of...

....Sally Rogers was based on two writers Carl Reiner worked with on "YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS" and "CAESAR'S HOUR": Selma Diamond (who had most of Sally's sarcastic character; she actually went on Johnny Carson's "TONIGHT SHOW" in the '60s to occasionally "hunt" for a single man, as Sally did on 'THE STEVIE PARSONS SHOW') and Lucille Kallen (who had the typing skills that most of Sid Caesar's staff didn't, and a keen comic mind).

I think it was best said in the episode where the magazine article gives Rob credit for being the
genius behind the genius. Buddy says "We were
around before anybody ever heard of Rob Petrie."
And Sally says "Yeah, but we weren't going anywhere and neither was Alan." I gotta go with Rob. It seemed like Sally was a toned down version
of Selma. (Who seemed like she might say anything
when she was on talk shows. She was a funny lady.)

Maybe that was because Sally and Buddy's skills didn't mesh very well. Buddy was great with the one liners and Sally could type, visualize the comedy, and come up with a few one liners herself, but put them together and it doesn't add up to a whole comedy routine. Once Rob came into the picture they had the perfect combination to make a great show. Anyway, I still have to agree with Carrie and MillieHelper, if they lost Sally, they would definately be nowhere, Rob or no Rob. In my opinion, Sally couldn't be lost, Rob was very much needed most of the time, and Buddy was the most expendable.

Default If there's any proof of how how close....

.....all three writers were, see "I Was a Teen-Age Head Writer". Apparently,
when Rob joined Alan's staff in "1952" (depends on who was writing the story), he brought with him the organization necessary to meld Sally and Buddy's talents with his, and create a crackerjack writing team.

Agreed. A case where the whole is better than the parts.

Definitely. It was implied that Rob was the ideas guy, Sally the dialogue writer and Buddy the master of the one-liner.

Having tried to write in group before, it was amazing how well they all worked together and how they still liked each other at the end of the day. That's the type of team every show wants.
