Did anyone else watch Primetime last night? They had a segment abt people who want to be amputees by CHOICE. These people have no disease, they are perfectly healthy and normal (obviously not in the brain though)...there was a man in his 50's who put his legs in dry ice and allowed the dry ice to "burn" his legs. He then went to the ER and the doctors couldn't save his legs below the knees so they amputated them. Which is what the man wanted. A woman attempted the same thing, however, i guess she didn't leave her legs in the dry ice long enough and the doctors were able to save her legs. However, one leg is so badly damaged, it looks like it's mangled. Part of it is just skin on bone, no fat whatsoever. Apparently these people have these thoughts since childhood and they want to be rid of limbs. Doctors, for ethical reasons won't perform an amputation by choice, which then causes these people to take drastic measures such as laying on railroad tracks, use a gun or rifle and shoot themselves in the limb, the dry ice method, etc.
I had heard abt this "disease" a few years back when there was a documentary abt a doctor in Britain who performed two amputations by choice on two different people. His reason was that these two individuals would harm themselves anyhow, and he would rather perform the amputations so there wouldn't be any complications. The other thing that was talked abt on the show was Foreign Accent Syndrome. People who have had some kind of stroke, when they regained the power of speech, they would talk in a foreign accent. This woman was talking like she was Russian even though she was born and raised here in the states. Another man had regained his speech and suddenly was speaking with a french accent. Bizarre! |

I totally watched Primetime last night. I am unbelievably fascinated with rare diseases. I had never heard of the 'amputation disorder' until last night. If anyone is interested in reading about it online, it's called "Body Integrity Identity Disorder." It's not in any of my medical books, not even under an older name. I don't think it's recognized yet in the Psychiatric Diagnostic Manual either, and it surely needs to be.
I've heard of "Foreign Accent Syndrome." A lady, not on last night's program was featured on Discovery Health's "Medical Incredible" last year. She had what sounded similar to a London, England Accent. She was from the United States. |

I saw that too. That was really weird and effed up. Why would you want to get your limbs amputated?! Crazy. The foreign accent symdrome was weird too but not as weird as the limbs one.
