Post David was Kevin?

I saw the episode where David made his first appearance, and he introduced himself as Kevin. Roseanne and Dan called him Kevin as well.

Does anyone know when they changed his name to David?

Sorry if this has already been posted.

Thanks. From the sounds of it, the writers (or whoever) probably decided they liked the name David better. Roseanne's explanation is very weak, but they must have felt the need to somehow explain it.

Nobody changes their name, just like that, for a girlfriend. It's silly.

Darlene probably threatened to beat him up if he didn't.

That explanation makes sense because of how PASSIVE David/Kevin was. Kevin/David put the P in Passive-lol

Exactly. But at least Roseanne tried to "explain" it...as weak as the explanation was. Not like other shows that try to pull the wool over our eyes and just make changes thinking we won't notice.

Yeah, I think this was more of an in-joke than an explanation. This sometimes happens on shows...a character will have a different name on an early appearance of a series, and then someone, be it the actor or producers will change it out of the blue. On the first season of Full House, Jessie's last name was Cochran, but it was later changed to Katsopolis in later seasons at John Stamos' request. Also, for his first appearance on Gilmore Girls, Kirk was named Mick...and then in subsequent episodes, he was Kirk. It just happens sometimes, and its pretty sloppy if you ask me...

I've read that they wanted his name to be David but Johnny Galecki was already doing a project with the name "David", so they used Kevin for that episode, but whatever project it was died so they used David.

Hey, nice bit of trivia! I just checked IMDb, and, in January of 1992, (when he first appeared on Roseanne) Johnny Galecki was indeed playing a character named David on a tv series called "Billy", which was a short-lived spinoff of "Head of the Class".

yeah, well my mom said she thought that mabey they called him kevin cause there was already a "david" in d.j. (david jacob). But i doubt that, because prior to that they only used dj's full name once & that was in like season one (I think he & roseanne were playing hide & seek) anyway...I thought it was pretty funny the firs time I caught it, haha I'm like "what the heck!!!" well...guess ya had to be there.

They also used it in the Spelling Bee episode, and in the tornado episode (but it was edited out in syndication)

Roseanne's explaination of the name change (Darlene changed his name) was obviously a joke, like how they made jokes about Sarah Chalke taking Lecy's place. (The cause of DJs insanity in "All about rosey", "Where the hell have you been?" in the baby shower episode, Bewitched Darren, and telling the soap opera stars that they barely recognized their daughter)
