Default Congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillillies Jimmy Rollins on his...

...TWO game hitting streak. I am sorry, but Rollins does not have a legitimate hit streak like Joe Dimaggio.

I know-lol They are connecting last season hits with this one and they are still overlooking the fact that the Phillies are 0-2-lol

Should Carl Hubbell's record of 24 consecutive wins not count because he won 16 and the end of one season and 8 to start off the next?

Hitting "streaks" are an overrated 'stat' anyway...

Not to take anything away from Dimaggio, an incredible player, but hitting in 56 consecutive games isn't any more valuable to a baseballl team than is hitting in 56 NON-consecutive games...

Dimaggio was always proudest of his World Series rings, not the streak.

I didn't care much for his 'streak' since the phillies keep blowing games

Winning a World Series is definitely more important than a hitting streak, but that streak is still very impressive considering nobody has been able to get to it.

Very true...it's unusual for a record holder to be that far ahead of a runner up... and I've read that after DiMaggio's streak was stopped, he immediately went on another 15 game streak, eventually hitting in 71 out of 72 games...

And I have to admit, it is nice that a player like DiMaggio does hold that record. Twenty years ago I was saying that someone would break Lou Gehrig's playing streak before anyone breaks DiMaggio's record. Because determination and the ability to play with pain (i.e. human characteristics) would be the main ingredients in breaking Gehrig's record (along with some luck in avoiding truly serious injury), I agreed with a writer (Bill James) that said that Gehrig's record would fall first. DiMaggio's record is going to be tough to break because determination is really irrelavent. One can't manufacture a hit by being determined.

I think the only other single-season record that dwarfs the runner up in this manner would be the fluke record for triples, 36 by Owen(?) Wilson. I'm thinking the next highest total is like 26.
