So, in about six days, I will be in New York for spring break with a couple of my friends! We're going to check out some colleges over there and sight see and just have a break. So to all of you New Yorkers and anyone who's visited, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Any places we have to see and eat at? We're staying at a Holiday Inn close to Penn Station, so anything close to there and fun is good. And now, the weather...is it cold? How cold (keep in mind, I'm from So Cal)? I have no clue what to pack and I don't want to under-pack and freeze. Thanks!

You've picked a good time to visit. The cold weather looks like it's going away finally, and the temps have been in the 60's and low 70's lately.
If you're in the Penn Station area, you're just a few blocks South of Times Square and the theater district, where there is tons of fun things to see. Further North is the world famous Central Park. Very nice this time of year.

I know this sounds a bit touristy, but when the weather gets nice, a ride on the Staten Island ferry is a nice way to kill an hour, and it's free.

I was just in NYC about two weeks ago.

- Be sure to layer your clothing. It's April now, so it'll be warmer. But remember that NYC is right on the coastline, so it can get cold sometimes. Especially if it gets windy.

- I noticed a lot of people in Manhattan wear black jackets/coats. So if you have a black jacket with you, bring it with you.

- Manhattan is very safe, but keep some mace with you at all times.

- Don't bring an open-top purse with you. Keep it close to you at all times. Always guard your purse when you go on the subway.

- If you ride on the subway, have your change ready (have plenty of change handy). It's $2 for a SingleRide Metrocard, and I think you can get a week's unlimited rides Metrocard for $10. Not sure...I didn't get one. Somebody else will know. Half the time, the machines took bills and the other half, the machine would only take coins.

- If you can [and have time], go to Battery Park [right at the tip of lower Manhattan, you can see New Jersey] and then walk up north thru lower Manhattan to check out the WTC site. I highly recommend you check it out.

- Money, money, money. NYC is expensive, but you knew that already. You can expect to pay more than $10 with most meals. Be careful of how you spend your money - it goes fast.

- For God's sake, don't hang around bars or pubs after 3 in the morning. [I know this from experience

- I didn't see the Naked Cowboy when I went thru Times Square, and I went thru there a whole bunch of times. But if you do and see him, um, yeah, don't walk next to him.

I missed the damn Staten Island ferry when we headed there. TWICE.

It would've been a lot more fun than the sightseeing bus tour we went on. Twice.

One thing I learned while vacationing is to ALWAYS be prepared and take an umbrella (or at least a raincoat). You never know....

PZelda, were you ever in Times Square at night? What did you think of it? Looks a bit like Vegas out there. I did some walking around when I got off work Friday evening. Still haven't checked out the Virgin Megastore yet, but soon.

Does anyone know of a site that tells you how to get to a place on the subway? We're visiting NYU, Columbia and Barnard so I want to know how to get there via subway from our hotel.

Yup, we did, as a matter of fact. After we got off the nighttime bus tour in Times Square, it was about 9:30pm. We shopped/wandered around Times Square until 11/11:30pm. Truly colorful and pretty at night.

This site should help you out if you're looking for directions online. NYU is located in Greenwich Village, a very populated area in NYC, so you won't have trouble finding a train going there.

You're going to have a blast in NYC, regardless of what happens. It's definitely an experience.

Another thing I noticed about NYC is that even though everything is close together, it is a lot more open than London. What I mean by that is, the crosswalks are bigger, the sidewalks are bigger and if traveling in a group, you don't have to walk single-file.

How long are you going to be there? You didn't mention how long you would be in NYC.

How long are you going to be there? You didn't mention how long you would be in NYC.

I'm going with two of my other friends...leaving Saturday night (red eye plane), landing in New York on Sunday morning. We don't leave until late Thursday night (I think around 7 at night). So, a good four and half days in NYC. =)

yeah basically...i agree with everyone else. places to go: times square, central park, trump tower, thearter district.

also, you should go to carmine's or john's to eat, they have REALLY good food.

and yeah its been in the 60s/70s here lately, so it might be cool for you but its nice here.
