Question Abbreviations That Don't Make Sense

Does anyone know WHY the abbreviation for pounds is "lbs."? And why does
"Rx" stand for prescription? Those have always puzzled me.

Some abbreviations originate from Latin or Greek or other languages. I do know that "lbs." is Latin.

Word origins are always interesting....

So, "Rx" is derived from radix, the Latin word for prescription. And "lbs." comes
from the Latin word libra, which means both balance and pound weight. Thanks!

What does mmk mean? I've seen a few people use that abbrevation, but I'm not sure what it stands for.

I was wondering the same thing because I have also seen some people use "lolz" before. I checked them out on www.urbandictionary.com According to this slang dictionary, "mmk" is like saying, "Mmmmm...okay" in a shortened manner. Here's the URL:

internet slang is the worst. I had a hell of a time figuring out what IIRC meant.
