Smile The Gidget DVD Rocks!

Holy minestrone! I didn't realize how much Gidget we were missing when the show was on TvLand. Last night I started watching the DVDs and it's like watching a whole new show because of the added dialogue and extra scenes.

For example, in the syndicated version of "Don't Defrost The Alligator" we never find out why the man from the animal protection agency wants to know if the Lawerences have an alligator or even how he knows about the alligator in the first place. Turns out a permit was required to own a wild animal and the man found out about it from the pet store that sold the alligator to Davey's mom.

The episodes are much brighter than the syndicated episodes too. It was really cool seeing Sally Field talk about the show. I haven't watched the original pilot episode, but I will soon.

I'm so thankful Sony not only released this series, but gave it the star treatment it deserves.

So, who's gotten their Gidget DVD Set yet? What do you think of it?

Thumbs up

Sounds good to me. I might just purchase it now that you mentioned that Sally speaks of the show.

I was surprised by how much she speaks about herself! She talks about her parents, how she got into acting and about her relationships with the cast members. I remember reading here that she didn't like the show, but it seems that wasn't the case or she changed her mind.

I liked this show a lot & plan to get the DVDs. I wished the show lasted a lot longer. However, I never liked The Flying Nun.

Default According to the commentary Sally Field provides on BOTH box sets...

...she obviously prefers "GIDGET" to "THE FLYING NUN" these days. From what I've heard, she's much more happier talking about her memories during the time she was "Gidget". By the way, the ratings for the show DID rise during the summer of 1966, and ABC may have wondered if they'd made a mistake in cancelling the show that spring. In any case, it was too late for renewal. THIS is why they wanted "THE FLYING NUN" the following season-
to bring Sally back to TV every week. On that subject, Sally is somewhat melancholy about that period of her life...things were rough for her, dealing with that series and her personal life.....but that's another forum!

I got my copy just 2 days ago...only got to browse a little. So these are not syndie/rerun edits, and actually the original broadcast length? Wow...guess I won't rest on my "OK I have all of the episodes on DVD now" laurels and will have to look back on this stuff to see what I missed on TVL!

Guess having complete episodes makes up for the fact that the Screen Gems "S From Hell" is replaced by the Sony logo on every episode!

I did watch Sally's interview...pretty cool that, even with the name she since made for herself, she agreed to return to speak on the character that first put her in the public eye. I always understood that she preferred Gidget, especially to The Flying Nun. It was also really cool of her to do some mini-tributes to some of her fellow stars on the show, and to tell some stories. (Another nitpick...no mention of Betty Conner? I guess Sally had more about Don, Peter, and Lynette that she found worth sharing, though)

But yes, having the DVDs will be great, and greater still to respark my interest in this vastly underrated show. I never loved Sally Field more than in this role.

I just bought it through Amazon & am currently waiting for it to arrive! I always loved the show. Too bad it lasted for as little time as it did!

We're checking it out thru Netflix, I haven't seen it in a store yet.

But we'll buy the season whenever we see it at the store... if we don't see it after a while, i'll probably buy it online.

We like the show... and Sally Field was just too cute!

EDIT: And it was funny to see Bonnie Franklin, of "One Day at a Time" fame, case as one of Gidget's occasional friends in the series.

On the Flying Nun extra she stated that she had no direction in her life at the time. She didn't know what she wanted to do, she turned down the part and her Stepdad talked her into it by telling her she might not be offered anything else. It was really interesting, it's in another forum but it's dead there.

When comparing The Patty Duke Show and Gidget, Patty was the cool chick and Gidget was the nerd. And that buck-toothed friend of Gidget's named LaRue. What a dog! Patty Duke had the dual role of playing herself and twin cousin Cathy. She did well in both roles.

The Patty Duke Show is pretty good. The Gidget episodes are silly. The Patty Duke Show theme song is a classic, the Gidget theme is indistinguishable.

Yeah, I wonder what ever happened to Betty Connor... she was beautiful. This pic above on this page is not a good photo, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info about her out there. You'd think Sally would talk about her at least a little... she talked a bit about Pete Duel (who played her brother in law on the Gidget show)...she really liked him, but Duel killed himself on New Year's Eve 1971 with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. I wonder how Sally and Betty got along on this show, and really wonder what ever became of Betty.

btw, don't know if you've seen the 'Pilot' eposide yet, but Connor has black hair in that one... she was much prettier during the regular episodes as a kind of strawberry blonde.

Now I don't doubt that TPDS, though I never really watched it, is good in its own ways. Maybe if I got to watch it again I'd agree for myself. But if you like it and dislike Gidget, WHY POST ON A GIDGET BOARD IN THE FIRST PLACE?????

And I am one who liked Lynette Winter and the character of Larue. Yes a bit gawky, but it fits the role. And regardless, I did fancy her a bit on the show. It's wonderful not having to expect every member of the opposite sex we find attractive to be PERFECT. Other people should try it.
