Default Mom to other Moms - Is Raven Getting Too "Ghetto"?

Hi All,

I know I am going to stir up a HUGE pot here and by the way I am African American. I am just MAD as you can imagine. I have two very intelligent kids, 7 and 8. I allow them to watch TV only on Friday, Sat and Sunday. I have to say I am extremely disappointed over this season of That's so Raven. By the way Disney DOES NOT DO A GOOD JOB PORTRAYING us in a good light anyway so this was a serious blow. When has there EVER been a Disney movie or good show where we are at least one of the main characters where we are not acting literally out of character like idiots and running around babbling. ie. The Sweet Life of Zach and Cody. The same goes for any other ethnic group. My kids are already banned from watching The Proud Family for obvious reasons. In Lizzie McGuier (sp.) the only African American didn't talk! How embarassing!!! Why is this ok? Other ethnicities should be outraged as well. The ideal is not blonde hair and blue eyes. It only part of the American make up. Where are all of the Latin girls? I even know several Caucasians who are ticked off b/c they feel it is not even close to realistic. In any case back to my point, when are they going to wake up and stop thinking all of us are living in the ghetto, and all we do is eye rolling, finger stapping and have jacked up language --- it is NOT FUNNY!!!! Trust me for all you out there, watch the next show ESPECIALLY the one that just came on this weekend which I am sure they will repeat. It is the one with Raven's cousins from the country. If you are African American and embarrased to watch with someone outside of your family, you know what I am talking about! I come from a HUGE family, and guess what Disney, everyone went to COLLEGE!!!! No one in our family talks like that nor do we know people who do! This is just getting crazy and I had to vent. Please tell me I am not the only one. When my friends started banning this show for their kids a few years back, I couldn't understand why, well it hit home last week for sure!!! Please excuse any misspellings etc. b/c I had to type quickly as I RUN MY OWN BUSINESS!!! Yes Disney, it is true! I also have a ton of friends who are Dr's, Lawyers, run their own business etc. who don't have relatives who talk like THAT! Don't let the videos on cable fool everyone into thinking that is anywhere close to the norm. My kids don't watch those EITHER!!!! It's amazing how if you plant seed into younger kids, it will grow into a falsehood. PARENTS WATCH WHAT YOUR KIDS WATCH so they do go out into the world ignorant. Write Disney!!!

I totally agree with you! I am a blue eyes blonde, but I get so tired of the way blondes are portrayed! Excuse me! Not all blondes are dumb, not all blondes are totally out of it!! I went to college and have a successful career!

There are certain shows my son is not allowed to watch. Most of them are on Nick. They are just too far out there for me and I can't allow him to watch them and call myself a decent parent. Unfortunately there are too few parents out there that out limits on what their kids watch. I for one am interested in what my son sees on tv. I want him to know that everyone is equal, no matter what they look like on the outside. It's what's on the inside that counts!!

Those country cousins were in the country....I'm sure alot of people in the middle of nowhere whether black or white don't go to college. And Victor runs his own business...Tanya is pursuing a law career, its not like Disney have them mowing the lawn all day.

I checked back to read if there were any replies. The one who posted "Oh shut your mouth" - Case in point. Another mature smart "kid" I am sure who probably watches nothing but videos all day and believes everything she sees on TV. Thanks to the Mom who actually monitors her child! The posting by SuperStar on the country cousins. HELLO another ignorant comment. "I'm sure alot of people in the middle of nowhere whether black or white don't go to college." Are you kidding me? Really! That in itself is a complete stereotype! My father comes from a family of 14 (yes 14) and they lived in the COUNTRY!!! This is why this particular episode irritated me to my core AND THEY ALL WENT TO COLLEGE and so did their kids and I am one of them. NO ONE is in jail, no cousins in jail, NO BABY'S DADDY's etc. My Aunts and Uncles have been married for 20-30+ years. No we don't live in Wonderland but goodness I am so tired of the stereotypes! Television NEVER EVER portrays any positive images. HELLO why would they b/c no one would watch b/c everyone wants negativity b/c our own self esteem. If people knew that we as a people are not as pitiful or as sad as they think, where would get these so called images from. These Rappers play up to it and get rich. Check out how many are REALLY hard core. Most of them went to college and are totally playing the music industry. THat is why there are so many feuds when someone tells on them and says they are not really "from the streets". I acutally went to a pretigious college with one of them and he GRADUATED WITH ME!!! I was shocked to see him television as a "so called rapper" from the ghetto. Please, his parents paid not only all of his tuition but also for his fraternity fees and high end dorms!

But its not like Disney are portraying them as dropouts or something. Ravens cousin was about 15 or 16 so she obviously would not be in college. And you know what, you should probably be writing to Disney about instead of writing about it on a message board where only immature kids will get to read it.
