IMO, these two never had any romantic chemistry. When they became a couple, I thought that was a big mistake. What does everyone else think?

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you there. The show definately wasn't as good after Caroline and Richard got together. But that wasn't the only reason - a whole bunch of stuff happened laterly which wasn't too cool;
Like, who decided it would be a good idea for Caroline to work in an office?! I mean, it didn't *totally* suck but I preferred it when she worked in the apartment. And *why* did Annie start dating Dell?? That made no sense to me either. And, on top of all that, I will NEVER forgive the people who made this programme for ending it on such a cliff-hanger like that!!! It was cruel and unfair and I shall have to spend the rest of my life in eternal torment not knowing who, if anyone, Caroline actually married!!!! p.s. OMG, I loved Rich and Caroline as a couple. I mean, it's like Sam and Diane from Cheers. They work together, but fall in love at the same time. It's sooo cute! But yes, I am living in the fact that I don't know who Caroline married. They need a reunion for the five years or something....

I admit that when Richard and Caroline finally got together, the show went downhill. Richard wasn't the same and ever since they got together, he wasn't as romantic and just took advantage of her, thinking he would always have her. Well, guess he learned his lesson at the end!

I liked it when they got together because I was rooting for them and I LOVED the first ep of season 4 when Richard puts his boxers in the microwave.
However, I also loved the eps from earlier seasons where there was real sexual tension between them. That was never there in season 4 which was a shame. They quickly became boring as a couple, cute though they were. |

actually, i tend to disagree. in fact, the problems of the fourth season and in caroline and richard's lack of chemistry throughout can be attributed to the lousy writing and the constant changes in scriptwriters during that last season. plus the creators, marco penettte and fred barron didn't put much of their input into the development of those characters later on the series. in fact, there were instances in the fourth season, earlier on where caroline and richard did care about each other and i totally disagree 100% with those who said that richard used caroline and treated her badly. seeing as for me, that was not how and some other fans saw it. i don't care what other people think but there are some caroline in the city fans who love caroline and richard as a couple, like myself who and believe that richard isn't the type of guy that others have portrayed him as a man who used and abused caroline. to me that is bull. despite the criticisms of the final season, i actually thought it was okay and it wasn't as bad but i certainly felt the last few episodes was a cruel and terrible betrayal of everything the show originally stood for, right from the first season and the first episode. there was none of that classic charm the first two seasons had and the one-to-one banters from caroline and richard. instead we had a stupid office, characters like plum and mailroom dave who to me were a waste of space. i liked reg though and had there been a fifth season, i'm sure he would've featured regularly as a character. and to rub salt in the wounds, a nobody called randy and richard being a father to julia's child as well as telling caroline he didn't want children entered the scene and was so far fetched, it made for painful viewing. frankly, i blame the writers- they were responsible for the downfall of caroline in the city and for it being axed. they basically shot themselves in the foot.

Since I'm still a new viewer, not even having barely gotten into the second season yet, I probably shouldn't be commenting on this. However, I do know that Richard and Caroline become a couple and although I think they are cute together, I really like Del more. He just seems better suited for her. Plus he's handsome whereas Richard is merely cute. My opinion of Caroline and Richard might change as I get toward Season 4 or wherever their relationship takes off, but for now I like Del better. But Richard is a great character. Definitely the funniest, IMO.

I admit it has been a while since I've watched this show, but I remember wanting Caroling and Richard to be together, and then being sort of let down once it happened. I need to watch this show again.

i loved and still love caroline and richard as a couple. yeah sure they were both opposites- he was pessimistic, she was optimistic; she was smiling, cheerful, having fun, he was mostly gloomy, miserable and would sometimes make snide comments.
but the phrase opposites attract definitely applies to caroline and richard. and i do think they have a connection, in the sense that their caring sides are very much similar to one another. i could sense that with them. |

Now that I've finished the whole series I have to say that had I been a fan of Caroline and Richard the way I am of Niles and Daphne on Frasier... I would have been TICKED had Frasier treated Niles and Daphne the way CITC treated Richard and Caroline. As much as I wanted them to be a couple during the first two seasons, I found myself wishing they would break up! The only times in Seasons 3-4 that it was even evident that they were a couple were when they would kiss. And that was on occasion!
I grew kind of tired of Richard's monotone voice and them bickering all the time. It's like why even bother going through all of the cuteness and so forth to get them together when they are just dull and lifeless as a couple? When Caroline had that brief fling (or infatuation) with Randy, I actually found that almost more interesting. |
